yup, it's all Charles Martinet.

Only regional voice changes I know of are that in Japanese Mario Party 1 (or maybe 2?), a few characters said "Oh my god!" when they lost, and this got changed in English version.

Looking on Wikipedia, the thing they mention is that they might have decided to make him Italian after giving him a mustache. I know they gave him the mustache because they needed to add more detail to his face but because of the sprite sizes anything more would have been too difficult to add.

For whatever reason, Mario seems to have been created to make fun of Italians. That's all there is to it.

Mario, though he is the hero, is a fat plumber. We're meant to laugh at his heavy accent, which is why he was played by Captain Lou Albano.



Meanwhile, his main enemies are Goombas, which is a derogatory term for Italians. They are represented as dark skinned guys with unibrows who waddle around looking pissed off and wanting to start a fight with whoever they see, only to get squashed quite easily.

Who came up with this and who had a problem with Italians, I have no clue.

I figured that the mustache from the original donkey kong would have a part in it.

I started a replay of Mario 64 last week and the thought had just dawned on me today. It seemed so random, but it also gave me a feeling that I could also topple a Giant turtle-dragon chance he ever takes my girl. (I also am Italian)
