It clearly says in the manual.. and intro... something along the lines of "this is your rival, you two have known each other since you were kids, etc."

Well, for what it's worth, Bowser probably considers Mario his rival for Princess Peach's attention. That's something.

But Cloud vs Sephiroth? Not rivals. Link vs Ganon? Not rivals.

There are plenty of synonyms for rival. Like Opponent.
That could be what they were thinking.

Also, Merriam-Webster defines "rival" as: "one of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess."

So, I guess they could be fighting over Peach!
