radiohead will not show up on the list at all. the HM list and albums 50-21 have already been posted, and if it was anywhere, it'd be in one of those two posts

I mean I figured TKOL would be left out due to the mediocre review, but I expected that Lotus Flower would at least break the top 20 tracks

I like Real Estate, but that's not even close to being the best song on the album
for real though, if you still think of pitchfork as a serious source for music taste or criticism you need to stop. this site hasn't been viable in four years.

they have a handful of talented writers. it's not as if the site is completely without merit

like I said, I thought the EOY stuff for 2010 was wonderful

I don't really care for the poser lists that pitchfork comes up with every year. Every time they shake their choices up for their list just to have that 'surprise' effect
no. i'm just saying that it's silly to think the pitchfork overlords switch around album placement to get one over on their readership. as i said, the process is completely transparent - there's no need to make wild assumptions about it.
For some reason the HUGE banner (that Icon screencapped) that linked to it has disappeared these last few days when I go there. Not sure what's happening.
But yeah, a bit disappointing this year. I listened to their spotify playlist of the top 100 and it was just okay - compared to last year at least.
Album Predictions: 3) James Blake 2) M83 1) Bon Iver

They had to have done this last year with Round and Round. I mean that song REALLY grew on me, but I think the indie cred gained by putting that over Runaway was immense.

And I'm not one of those douchey curmugeons that say every year sucked at the end of the year-- I really liked last year from beginning to end with movies, TV, and music.
This year only TV has been stellar imo.

movies have been down this year but hollywood only has itself to blame. i'm sure there's some great foreign 2011 movies but I won't see those until next year when they hit the festival market.
this year saw the release of SMiLE. ignoring the ridiculous depth and variety in music from 2011, that's the best release since Untrue. this may have been a down year in hip-hop compared to the last two years (it's easy to create a solid top 5 that compares but after that there's a bit of a drop), and there's only been a handful of good rock albums, but everything else this year has been excellent.
if the king of limbs is the best thing you've heard this year, you should probably listen to more music.

An album from 1966 cant be the best album of 2011.
Hip-hop kinda sucked this year, but that's mostly because nothing major was really released-- which bodes well for 2012 (Andre 3k may have the GOAT next year).
Rock, as you said, was nothing special either.
And to be honest I am getting sick of this indie electronic dance **** that Pitchfork and iconsience have been really latching onto these past few years. Some of it is phenomenal, but Christ there's too much of it and it can't sate my musical needs for an entire year. Same with folk.

There were some great rap releases this year: Undun (strong contender for AOTY), The Dreamer/The Believer, Section.80, Elmatic, Returnof4Eva, Take Care, Cole World, Cats & Dogs, Book of David, OG Hindu Kush - In 3D, The One...Cohesive, Oneirology, etc.
Not a lot of big names on that list, but some very good albums.

this is true. but smile is a 2011 release.

K.R.I.T, Roots, Lamar, Cunninlynguists, ASAP Rocky. Those top five could hold their own against the best of the last two years. After that, there's a big drop of quality. 2010 didn't have that, but 2010 was a ridiculous year for hip-hop.

what 'indie electronic dance ****' is that? and iconsience hasn't really latched on to anything. i have, but it's not the same stuff championed by pitchfork.

"Got my n***** in Paris and they goin' gorillas, hah?!" There it is: hah?! Go ahead. Say it. Out loud. It's fun. And there's nothing that summarizes the wonderfully obnoxious platinum-crusted one-percent-ness of Watch the Throne better than Kanye West's go-to ad lib. Hah?! is funny, memorable, annoying, dumb, genius, earth, water, sky-- it's the entire known universe in one impossibly indignant syllable. Nobody knows what it means because it means everything.
Kanye actually says hah?! in "N***** in Paris", but this instant new stadium-rap blueprint is also the closest Mr. West and Jay-Z came to translating hah?! into song form on Watch the Throne. It is essentially one long hah?! The raps are on super-stunt, always. This is one of those tracks where a mere mention-- Olson twins, Margiela jackets, Audemar watches, motherf****** fish fillet sandwiches-- is akin to being knighted with relevance both actual and meme-based. Co-producer Hit-Boy's instrumental isn't shy either as it hurdles asteroids upon some tranced space-invader s*** handed down from Bambaataa's "Planet Rock". On a scale of hah? to hah! the beat is HAH! No question.
this is what cokes must feel whenever he finds someone who doesn't hate ted leo.
