Unless I am missing something huge (not nearly into Pokemon as much as I was back in the day) these guys don't exactly exist at the same time or... something?

And Red kinda had to work together with Blue (and vice versa) if you wanted to complete your Pokedex.

Blue isn't the protagonist of Blue. Gold and Silver made it canon that the RBY protagonist is named Red, and the RBY rival is named Blue.
