I know you all are going to call me a conspiracy theorist for saying this but I'll be damned if it doesn't look at this point like the Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure Obama gets reelected.

Or they're trying to play to their evangelical base for the primaries and will move center-right during the actual election run.

Like they always do.

It would make sense. The Republicans basically make sure Obama doesn't accomplish anything as it is. They might figure another 4 years of him in office would be a cakewalk.

First of all I would like to make it clear that this topic is based on the actions of the entire Republican field as a whole. Never in my lifetime have they done even half as much damage to their image among the swing voters as they have this season. They have literally already lost this election before the primary is even held.

their front runner is an establishment politician who has so much dirt on him that so many people have a negative view of outside of the base, that I cannot believe it. the rest of them? (exception is huntsman or romney, who they dislike for other reasons) even the base realizes are too incompetent to actually nominate.

I don't think you understand what the word "literally" means.

Also, I think you're overestimating the importance of social issues for the 2012 election. It's going to come down to the economy one way or another.

Romney may look strong and may appear close in polls against Obama, but he has baggage that Obama will immediately go after and cruise from there. That's prolly why the GOP is trying to get someone other than Romney...unfortunately, their someones are even worse, and those that actually stand a chance against Obama aren't conservative enough to win the GOP nominee.

That shows they are confident they will win the general election. The economy is so bad that Obama can't win, so the Republicans feel they can get away with running far to the right to win the nomination.

Romney's baggage is nothing. The only people his 'baggage' upsets are the Tea Party. It's why he polls so well against Obama. Moderates and Independents don't care. Gingrich, on the other hand, has so much baggage it's unbelievable and would doom him against Obama.

And the GOP is not trying to get someone other than Romney. Everyone in the GOP establishment wants Romney. But there's nothing they can do in the face of the Tea Party.
