I got the very basics. Like - I know that you get 4 goes at scoring 10 yards and if you succeed, you get to try again.

And I know the aim is to get the ball into the endzone.

But that's about it.

Let's start with scoring, how many points do you get for each touchdown/kick over the top/whatever other ways there are of scoring points.

6 per touchdown
3 per regular field goal

After a touchdown, the scoring team can either kick a field goal from the two yard line for one point (Making the traditional seven), or can try to score again on one play from the two yard line for two points.

Everyone who makes the playoffs has to play in the pre-Superbowl end-of-season tournament. Wildcard teams have to play an extra round. Or just get worse seeding. I forget.

If you have the highest win percentage of the teams in your division you are guaranteed a spot. If you aren't the best in your division but are otherwise the second or best overall in your conference (nfc or afc, each has four divisions) out of the people that didn't make it, you get in.

And 2 points for a safety, which is if you down the ball in your opponent's own end zone. They don't happen very often, though, so this is probably meaningless.

This is because no matter how smart of a move it is, any time it fails the coach gets vilified and if they don't have a strong history will probably get fired.

No, because you don't do the scoring, the other team does. You sack the QB or down whoever they hand the ball to or the receiver in their own end zone, and you score two points.

I already said I misread what you wrote.

But you don't need to be tackled, you can score a safety for the other team without their help.

And if you don't make it, they can pick up right where you left off. It's usually far less risky to punt the ball and make the other team go further.
