FIrst semester of college and about to start studying for my first finals week. I've done group studying for some exams over the course of the semester. In HS I studied by myself for finals and such.

Is it a bad idea to do group studying for finals? What's your opinion? Is finals time to sack up and just hit the books yourself? That's been my outlook so far in my life..

I think it depends on the person. I have always despised studying with groups because I get distracted, study slower, and overall just hate being near people while studying.

Group studying works as long as you get along with the people you're studying with and are all actually working together to learn the material instead of just goofing off under the pretense of studying.

group studying is good if you let the rest of the group do all the work for you and then benefit from it simply because you were present at the group study session

word.
It can also be great if you let someone explain something to you instead of trying to figure it out yourself.
For almost every test in my reading-heavy classes, I split the reading with a friend and we teach it to each other.

Definitely depends on the subject. For example, for my architectural history class group studying was great because we could discuss the buildings and time line and it would help everyone keep the sequence of events and classifications straight.
But for something like structures, which is more math and physics based, basically all you could do was practice problems. Unless you were unclear on an equation or something, there was really nothing to study as a group.

So yeah. Really good idea for some classes, kind of un-needed for others. I don't think it's ever a bad idea, unless your group is being very unproductive. Then it just turns into a waste of time, ya know?
