Picked up Duodecim yesterday. Seems rather fun, and even though I know it's basically a fighting game and so the plot isn't going to be important, the part of me that hates playing parts of a series out of order is insisting I should play the original first.
As I understand it, 012 is a prequel that takes place in another timeline or something, right? The whole world resets every so often and keeps leading up to the same events, the first game was the 13th time it happened, and this is the 12th. So in theory the plot should be more or less the same anyway?
So... yeah- is there any point getting the original Dissidia if I can find it cheap, or just look up a plot summary?
Also, what the hell is Prologus and is it worth buying it to unlock Aerith in 012 (because I love Aerith)?

None whatsoever. You can play the entire story mode from Dissidia in Duodecim.
Also Prologus was apparently this downloadable thing with a little story segment and a few characters. Aerith is merely an assist character, and unless you really love her and really hate Sephiroth, Kuja or Jecht, that shouldn't be the major reason for getting Prologus.

Well, Dissidia 1 is a significantly different game. Even the remake of story mode, while it has the same cutscenes, uses the 012 chessboard engine, and that one mode that was good for grinding in 1 was replaced by a different mode... but that said, you can definitely skip 1.
Harder to attain, harder to hold, harder to take advantage of the damage. Not to mention that focusing on EX has the downside of nerfing your own assist options, which is always a bad idea.
Also, EX Cancel became EX Revenge, which doesn't turn you EX and drains your entire bar and getting hit by an assist in EX Mode knocks you right out of it while giving your opponent the stage Bravery. Needless to say, it's not as great an option anymore.
