from what I've seen it seems like the community is only against gems if there's not a standard gem set. is that accurate? like if the game shipped with a set of gems and those were the only gems you could use, most people would like it?
Yeah, that's what people are afraid of. That, and that Capcom will sell DLC gems, giving people with money more access to better gems.
Capcom has said that they still haven't decided what they're going to do for distribution and all that, but they maintain that gems are all balanced against each other, so there won't be defined "best sets" for everyone or any overpowered gems.
DLC gems are no different than DLC characters. Pre-order gems aren't a big deal. They'll be straight banned from tournaments without issue. It might be annoying to face some people online with them but most players won't have them anyway.
Some people had a stupid kneejerk reaction to gems. Ono's presentation didn't really do Capcom any favors. Still, you really can't complain about gems being too hard to get, when, well, we have no f***ing clue how we're going to obtain them. Same goes for the possibility of gem selection being bad.
I'm not really sure what else there would be to complain about. That a single character can be more different than the same character compared to almost all other fighting games? There's nothing really wrong with that.
People kneejerked to Pandora mode too but its currently seen as rather useless. These guys need to stop and think about things and wait until we actually get a decent amount of info on s*** before going crazy about it.

Yes they are. If I don't buy Shuma-Gorath in MvC3 the only change is that I can't use him. Gems are equipment that can be used by any character. In the worst case scenario (DLC Gems being better than others), my characters could be worse because they don't have access to the same equipment. There's a world of difference between "Kazuya sold separately" and the hypothetical "give us more money or your Kazuya sucks"--factor in that Gems might be beneficial to multiple characters and you're looking at several of your characters being inferior until you pay more money to upgrade them.
Suppose MvC3 came with only two Assists and the third was sold separately. You can still use all the characters and have some options with them, but some abilities are locked from you. People would scream bloody murder over that, especially if those abilities turned out to be the best option for some characters.
Hopefully not that bad, but "Worst Case"...

Mind you, I'm waiting for more details before getting too worked up but if there are DLC Gems it's going to be different than DLC Characters, no matter how the balance goes.

As it stands, Chun can do her super, and one second of lightning legs, and then she keels over and dies.
That is nowhere near enough time for Pandora mode to even be considered a threat.
From: agesboy | #009 Then use different gems? Even if the preorder gems are good, there's no way they're going to be the ONLY viable option.
Not the point. Making the player pay for content that helps them win or gives them different attributes should never happen. Ever. I've always believed this.

The other problem with Gems, at least for tournaments, is time. Button checks, changing button configuration, counter picks between matches, etc. already takes long enough, how much longer is browsing through "hundreds" of gems gonna take?
And isn't Pandora mode like a focal point of the game's storyline? I mean yeah, lol fighting game stories, but they've already promoted it so much and made it a big deal for the story, I find it surprising they'd can it this far along. Just tweak it so people might actually want to use it now and then. But that doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be good enough that it gets used in every single fight, either.
