CHAPTER 1:

The Action: Surprisingly the whole chapter is a giant melee fight, showing off the game's improved melee combat. It still isn't that great, it's mostly just arkham city light with a little more cinematic feel to it. What was interesting however, was the way the cutscene stuff and the gameplay were interwoven pretty seamlessly. After an important punch in the final section of the fight, the camera would shift to a movie type thing for the impact, then you would be back to the regular gameplay. It was kind of cool. I wouldn't mind another section like this, but much more and I think I would get tired of it, as the melee really isn't that good still, but that is not the game's strength anyway.

Also, graphically, character model wise, game looks amazing. Environments also look great, though I actually think Rage's look a bit better. However, Uncharted doesn't have all the unfortunate pop in everywhere, so in the end, UC3 ends up with the edge. The mocap work is even better than usual. Also, for the cutscenes, the camera angles feel even more cinematic, like watching a movie, than the first 2 games.
----
The Story: Already some interesting things to think about. Why would drake be selling his precious ring? And how do they know this "Kate" person? Drake already seemed a little... different in this attitude wise. You could sense some desperation or something.
-----------
Best Moment: "Still a cocky little s***"- Kate Marleau talking about drake, kind of funny.

CHAPTER 2

The Action: Mostly the section to get you familiar with the platforming. I still have the same problems as usual, occasional deaths from just not being quite sure where to go next. Pretty slow pace early on just like UC2. It's not too bad on the first playthrough, it gets kinda annoying on a 2nd playthrough though. the sections where you just follow sully are especially slow paced.

The Story: Much more story focused chapter. I O_O'd when I started off as young teenage Drake. Sully going for the same ring, Drake already going for TREASURES at a young age is interesting. Quick Sully hanging out with Kate cameo, and then a nice interaction with Drake and Sully. The slow pace of the gameplay was annoying, but the story stuff remained solid.

Best Moment: The whole conversation between Drake and Sully, their first time meeting essentially, and I thought it was a cool moment. Runner up is the shock at realizing you are playing as teen drake.

CHAPTER 3

The Action: After a bit more platforming, we get to our first exciting moment of the game, a giant chase scene! Uncharted has done chase scenes for like 30 seconds max. I recall in UC2 running from a truck and from bullets. in UC1 you run from zombies for a few seconds. Other than that, for some reason, chase scene have been neglected. This one was pretty solid though imo. Its main problem was the trial and error nature of it, it can already be tough to figure out where to go next sometimes in UC games, take that, and be forced to figure it out within seconds, and I'm sure most people will get caught at least a few times during this scene. It was still pretty fun though, lots of fast paced action and a few cinematic moments. The trial and error wasn't too bad thanks to the lack of loading times.

The story: Lots of great stuff yet again here. Sully turns on his employers to protect a kid. His sudden decision that he wants him as a protege is odd, but whatever. The whole Sully/Drake scene in the bar is pretty cool (including Drake reaching for the beer instead of the coke, lol). They are slowly uncovering bits of Drake's upbringing, which is kinda interesting. We find out that Drake's ring is also a decoder for a map to TREASURE. Kate has the decoder, Drake has the key. The twist at the end where one of the main dudes was actually on their side is awesome, and the whole sequence of events suddenly makes complete sense, they were trying to flush out Kate as they obviously want the decoder, and the best way to lure her out is with what she wants most, the ring. "The Action" is a little slow so far, but the story is off to a good start.

Best Moment: Drake and Sully waking up from the dead, finding out it was all ACCORDING TO PLAN. Also Drake "Sully, you have a way of making everything sound dirty"

CHAPTER 4

The Action: OMFG I shot a couple people. Some light platforming this chapter, some REALLY light puzzle solving (as in, the puzzle basically solves itself for you, which is kind of unfortunate), and a couple times where you shoot guys. The shooting elements have stayed pretty much the same from the looks of things, maybe it feels a little bit better, but for the most part, I would still describe the shooting as solid but unspectacular. Also, the trend of action moments that have camera angles and the look of cutscenes is still happening a lot. I like this, it can be kind of confusing at first, because in every other game, when these special camera angles show up, I instinctually kind of stop playing, because this is supposed to be a cutscene, but thats not the case. They've done this with melee and platforming, if they can put in some moments like this for the shooting, I will be really impressed, but I doubt they pulled that off. Overall though, things are still kind of slow paced,

The Story: No real big plot things this time around, except that the people they are dealing with are clearly nuts, with some of the elaborate measures they use to cover their trail. Strangely enough, Drake even asks their new friend Charlie "who are we dealing with here?" you would think he would know of all people, maybe there is more than just Kate involved here. Also, Charlie is already a candidate for being one of the best new characters of the year, he is awesome.

Best Moment: When we discover charlie is terrified of tight spaces. He fits through a relatively easy little gap, and absolutely freaks out about it, it was pretty funny.

CHAPTER 5

The Action: Well we finally got to THE SHOOTING. It's mostly the same as ever. Controls are solid enough (you can spring in MP, why the hell can you not sprint in 1P still? Unless I'm missing something, I'd rather have sprinting in 1P than MP, very useful for going from cover to cover). Damage animations are still pretty poor, but oh well. This shooting segment was kind of dull though honestly, usually even the standard shooting segments in Uncharted 2 at least took place in an interesting location, this was just a dark tunnel. I don't think the melee is that great, but it does have some cool moments when it comes to interacting with the environment. In the bar fight in the 1st chapter I was able to throw someone out a window. Here, someone was running up some stairs to attack me, I hit the attack button, and instead of the usual punch, drake actually pushed him down the stairs, that was neat.

For the 2nd time in the game, there was a section where you have to find something in a museum type area, and it was super super annoying. I hope there are no more sections like this. I actually usually like Uncharted puzzles, so far they are pretty nonexistent, just trying to find something, no actual thinking involved.

The Story: We find out where Drake might have been those 6 months he was missing. Drake and Sully are off to france while chloe and charlie are off to the desert. I think it'd be cool if you got to play as chloe or charlie during their adventure (pulling a Gears 3), but I kind of doubt it. Also, we overhear Kate talking to her crew, she is an interesting villain for sure. If this was UC2, the crew would have been caught long enough for their enemies to figure out what they were doing, then Drake and crew would have escaped and followed after, Im glad they avoided following this same formula for once.

Best Moment: Charlie has a few good lines during one of Drake's speeches, but I think my favorite moment was actually pushing that dude down the stairs, that was a pretty surprising twist on the melee, and I hope there is more interactivity with the environment like that.

CHAPTER 6

The Action: This was the first chapter to have a bit of everything, platforming, shooting, puzzles. The platforming was "OK", what you would expect mostly. I'd love for some more platforming sections like UC2's ice area to show up, where you actually had to dodge stuff while jumping around.

The shooting stuff is getting a little better with the different guns finally being available and grenades (really annoying not having grenades when the enemy is being really patient behind cover and there is no way to flank, like in the previous chapter, so I'm glad they are finally here). I'd like a little more stealth to be put in, there haven't been many stealth opportunities yet. The AI was remarkably bad in the main shooting section, I honestly was just sitting in a corner area behind cover, and they came to me one by one, easy prey for fists and for shotguns.

I actually thought the strongest part of this chapter was the puzzles, there were 3, and I thought they were all reasonably clever.

The Story: The jungle setting makes me feel like I'm in UC1. Story wise, this was mostly giving us some more drake-sully development, which is always good. We have no idea how the BAD GUYZ knew they were here yet.

Best Moment: Ending cutscene of the chapter. As a dude is eaten alive by these spider things, the boss guy tells his crony to grab drake's ring, which the dying guy has in his hand, completely leaving the other dude to die, and no remorse about it, good stuff.

CHAPTER 7

The Action: First chapter that was really well done start to finish imo. We start with an excellent chase from SPIDERS, that was a great scene. From there, there is shooting and platforming, except the added urgency of the fire added a lot to each of these elements of the gameplay. The shooting had stuff breaking (one cool scene, where drake's foot gets stuck in some broken wood, and he has to shoot guys as Sully frees him), the platforming was done as everything falls around you, and then a final run away scene as the whole place burns to a crisp and falls around you. Pretty exciting from start to finish.

The Story: Nothing much happened, there was a good speech from Sully to Drake though about his actions. He asks Drake why he is doing this, which is pretty interesting if you think about it. I assume Drake wants to do this from his desire to be "great", but he doesn't respond to Sully's question.

Best Moment: The spider chase scene was pretty excellent, I'll give it to that. Honorable mention to a drake and sully conversation in syria, where they go to find chloe and charlie, who they assume are prisoners or something.

Drake: So we get in, save them, sneak out
Sully: *laughs* Sneak out eh?
Drake: Hey! You never know!

also, unfortunately, the melee isn't quite as interactive as I hoped, trying to throw people off ledges and stuff hasn't really worked. If you attack someone on stairs, the same sequence always happens, but thats about all I've found. I'm sure there are a few more melee scenes like the opening where there is fixed stuff you can do, but I kinda hoped you would be able to do that stuff anywhere, oh well.

CHAPTERS 8 AND 9

The Action: Mix of a lot of different stuff. Shooting, a few stealthy segments, some puzzles, some platforming. None of the platforming really got me going for this section personally. There were a few sections where you swing on ropes and chains which I do like though, as those sections aren't quite so automatic. The shooting was fine enough, I liked the end of chapter 9, when you are holding people off to get Charlie out, that part was pretty good. The puzzles were OK, there was a globe one that was absolutely awful though. I was trying to match up land masses, but it turns out, you just have to worry about the little dots of light instead, very annoying. the globe was a POS to move around too, oh well. I tried several more times to do cool things with the melee, I tried throwing someone off a ledge, but it just doesn't work. The melee is definitely better, but I hope next time around they go the extra mile to really make it great.

The story: Once again, the story continues to impress me by not falling into the same story traps as the first 2 games. I thought charlie getting MIND CONTROLLED was dumb as hell, and I thought for sure it'd be a predictable thing at the end where he screws them over, but hey they surprised me! They also managed to give Marleau the info she needs without doing the same "getting captured" for like 2 minutes thing. I love how they tried to burn charlie alive over just shooting him too, what a b****!

The main thing I liked about the story though is once again, 2 different people ask drake why the hell he is doing this. Chloe and Elena. I liked Elena's line especially "Sully would go to the ends of the earth for you... just don't ask him to". Drake still hasn't really answered the question each time it has been asked.

Also it looks like Elena and Drake broke up AGAIN but they STILL HAVE FEELINGS FOR EACH OTHER... AGAIN. I would say "jesus the stuff between them will be hella predictable", but, the game has managed to not take those exact same routes so far, so I have a little faith.

Best Moment: Probably the whole Drake and Elena conversation, it was pretty good stuff all around.

actually, I forgot about this. Best moment from those chapters is by far the section where you are platforming, and look up to shoot people down, a vertical shooting segment. That was really well done, and I like when they do interesting stuff with the platforming like that over just the regular stuff.

CHAPTER 10

The Action: A slower paced chapter to set things up in this new region. You spend a decent bit of time walking around, which I was fine with because the dialogue between characters was good in the mean time, and Yemen looks amazing. There was a light platforming segment and a big brawl, the brawl was fine, since it was a very scripted one, there was a bit more of that interactivity with the environment I like.

The Story: Elena and Drake TENSION. Talbot knows they are here now, but they have found the secret entrance they have been looking for. That sums it up, short chapter.

Best Moment: No one great moment, but there was lots of really funny dialogue here, especially near the end.

CHAPTER 11

The Action: The action here was a big chase scene, where Drake chases Talbot. It wasn't bad, it had some exciting moments, but personally I prefer the scenes where you run from someone. In a chase scene, the illusions of the game become way too obvious, you know you wont catch him until the game wants you to. And the few times I screwed up and lost him, he conveniently slowed down. In the scenes where you run away, if you screw up, you are done, adds a lot more tension.

The Story: Amazing encounter between Marleau and Drake here. She reveals Drake's past. Mom killed self, and he became essentially an orphan at age 5. Nathan Drake isn't his real name according to Marleau. She also claimed Sully merely has been using him over the years. I'll be interested to see how some of this stuff is explored, especially his name, as things go on.

Best Moment:

Marleau: I know a lot more about you than anyone else Nathan Drake... thats not your real name, but we won't dwell on that.

Marleau absolutely blows away every other UC villain ever.

CHAPTER 12

The Action: This is when I like UC's shooting, when it does something interesting with it. All the shooting takes place on and in the water here, which is pretty cool. I agree with the developers than you can really tell that they put actual water physics in the game, it makes a difference. My only problem with this section was that, since you can only use pistols and stuff in the water, I wish they provided more pistol ammo, I spent a lot of time scavenging around for some. Also, this area is kind of circular, so enemies spawn everywhere, so it is easy for them to sneak up on you. This is fine, except 2 different times I died because someone initiated a melee attack on me, and sometimes you can't get out of it right away, which means you just get shot up and can't do anything about it. Other than that though, I liked it.

I liked the shooting stuff after that even more. We had another vertical shooting segment, which was great, and shooting while hanging and climbing in other parts, which was also cool.

The Story: Sully is in danger, Nate's boarding a cruise ship to get to him, thats about it! Also we have a pirate enemy right now.

Best Moment:

*Nate sees rum on the table*: Pirates with rum? How cliche.

also, all the platforming shooting segments deserve a SHOUT OUT.

Disagree with your take on the melee system. I think it's great, a big improvement over U2. It'd be nice if they just completely got rid of the button prompts, but I understand why they're there. Still, too much fun to clear a room with melee alone. The blindfire + melee MP tactic works surprisingly well in the SP, too!

Loved the Talbot chase scene. That was a lot of fun. I also agree that Marlowe is by far the best Uncharted villain. She doesn't have much in the way of competition, but she's delivered as a worthy antagonist for Drake -- she's threatening, and there's some established history between them.

The big brute melee fights are boring after the second one. Its literally the exact same animations over and over again.

Also, shooting mechanics are bad. The deadzone makes it seem likes your cursor is on a 2d plane moving in 3d world. I thought I was the only one who felt the aiming was off, but I'm not. Booted up UC2 for reference, there's DEFINITELY a difference.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=450689

All that said, I'm past ch.15, and the game has really kicked it into overdrive. Its a great video game despite its gameplay flaws.

The shooting is different, for sure, but it isn't bad. I spent the first few chapters after you get the first gun tweaking the sensitivity to a level that felt more comfortable. You end up adjusting over time, too, but I wouldn't recommend anyone stick with the default sensitivity. You gotta push that up at least a bit.

CHAPTER 13

The Action: This was a cool chapter. More WATER PHYSIKZZZ for the most part, and I'm enjoying that, it's a nice twist on the shooting. The highlight was definitely the end of the chapter, when you have boats across from your boat shooting at you, you eventually finish off the whole boat with some RPG blasts.

The Story: nothing this chapter

Best Moment: RPGing the other boat!

Its definitely odd to compensate for after playing Gears 3 for so many hours, which has fantastic shooting mechanics, from the hit detection, recoiling, aiming, etc. Now, its damn near a challenge to line-up headshots with the pistols. Making small adjustments to the aiming is just comical in how rigid it is.

yeah, I do agree, Koolaid, precision is a lot harder in UC3 than in Gears. most of the time it feels so much more effective to just blindfire over actually aiming, which is disappointing.

dont forget the damage animations though, I think thats one of my main annoyances with UC games, the way enemies barely react to your shots, this is especially true if they happen to be moving, until you actually kill them, most of the time they just do not react at all.

I think it is very passable though for what it is worth, it's just one element of a game with a lot of things to it. If Gears had UC3's shooting elements, it would be a pretty bad game, UC3 has enough other things for it to not be as big of a deal.

Yes, which is odd because UC2 actually DOES have this. Shooting in general is just a big step back, even though I think the encounter design has improved, with all the flanking angles and the added verticalness . The chapter 12 shipyard fight sequence is one of the best action game sandboxes I've ever seen, and really shows off the versatility of Uncharted.

Still, its a shame the shooting is so wonky, especially after they nailed it in the second game.

The Action: Pretty much the same as the last few chapters, which is fine. My only problem here was a dumb bullet sponge type mini boss that shows up at one point, those are always pretty dumb. There were a few more opportunities for stealth here, which I liked.

The story: The pirates don't actually have Sully! This ship section has been pretty weak plot wise, I'm guessing they really wanted to do some on boat stuff, but weren't able to find a better way to tie things in to the story.

Best Moment:: Nothing really stood out this chapter.

CHAPTER 15

The Action: Some excellent platforming in this section inside of a sideways ship, pretty cool. Then a final escape from water, which was solid as well. All the ship stuff was pretty decent.

The story: Elena and Drake know where Sully is, and need to sneak on a ship to get there.

Best Moment:

*Drake looks at the ring on Elena's finger, right before he passes out from exhaustion" "I'm sorry"
Elena: I know.

I think the shooting sections are much improved by not having enemies react to your shots so much (they still react if you land a volley from an assault rifle, just not from one pistol shot). I find I don't dominate near as much as I did in UC2 (I replayed it just before UC3 released), and so need to think the battle through more.

The boat section makes it really appearent they had a bunch of cool set pieces in mind, and they just kinda built a story around that, instead of the other way around. Drake gets brought to the boat for something that didn't even matter, then tries to get to Radio tower but that isn't a working one so that didn't matter, then he gets to Sully who isn't really there, so that didn't matter either!

Yeah they flat out said thats how they build the game, they come up with the scenarios then write the plot around it. They didn't do a great job with that for that section
