Hey guys, I'm probably going to start a new d&d game. Anyone have advice?

I'm not 100% committed to an edition, but i have a lot of 3.0 edition stuff that i can dust off, and not a whole lot of anything else. Haven't been keeping up with the current trends, but I don't think any of my friends/players are gonna care.

I remember from the last game I ran that there were a few gameplay pitfalls I'd like to avoid... anybody here have any experience with the genre?

I played it a lot back home and I'm hopefully about to finally start playing again at school, I love it.

Cool. I think the genre overall is a lot of fun. I just remember a few things being difficult to deal with- mostly making each player feel relevant and useful. (The grappling and shapeshifting rules also hurt my brain, and I simply discouraged them, but that's an easier/completely different topic.)

My last party had a rogue, wizard, fighter-type (I think it was a ranger) and a cleric. The game went fine, but after a while they all seemed to have a niche except for the fighter. I ended up throwing magic items at her and special powers at everyone just to make the characters more distinct.

I'm hoping there's some house rule that can fix this without me having to work a whole lot of magic/pseudo-favoritism behind the scenes...

4th edition is much easier to learn than 3th in my experience. But then again, I don't really enjoy dungeon crawling that much.
