Actually Jakyl, DirecTV held out on Versus for like six months!

I typically side with the networks on these things, mainly because I think the providers excuse of "we just want to make sure your prices are low" is a bunch of crap. I pay you expecting certain channels. Raise the prices if you have to, just give me the OPTION of watching channels I want.

Why do we even need providers now? You could seriously just put this all up on the internet and we would lose nothing. The technology is there, the advertising structure is continuing to develop, and it's a much more open marketplace where small guys with interesting content can be successful. Cable companies should be a relic.

At least they aren't going to drop the shows due to low ratings like they did to G4 last year.

At worst, most of the Fox channels will be brought back in several months.

Is DirectTV doing anything to make up for it?

We have Dish Network. And when they increased their rates, they gave us Starz for a year free. And promised not to raise our rates for 2 years no matter what happens.

Old People plus Rural internet connections

I live in Alaska, and I'm pretty sure my internet connection is way behind typical US, which is behind typical Europe, which is behind typical Asia. If there's a significant chunk of people out there with slower internet, I'd be surprised. Already for me the switch is worth it. I have to buffer Youtube videos for a couple minutes before I watch, but altogether it isn't so bad.

Old people, I dunno maybe. Seems like most people know how to use a computer for basic tasks these days. My grandmother can e-mail me and watch Youtube.

I doubt it, they didn't do crap when they got rid of G4 either

So that you only have to pay one person for all the TV networks, rather than having to cut a check to 20 different companies.

Same thing with Netflix, really.

But, unfortunately, your reasoning is valid. I think within the next few decades, we WILL see all the content creators cut out the content providers like the middlemen that they are.

internet providers are cable providers in almost all cases

they will continue to keep this from happening as long as they can

and if cable gets cut, prepare for massive rate hikes on internet
