With some key that gives them access to all software or something, and it's not something Sony can patch.

Something similar happened a while ago again with some keys, but this time it seems that it's almost impossible for Sony to prevent the pirates from doing their things.

Can't post sources though, since the websites they're one are pretty illegal.

Can post this though :

Just good news after good news for the PS3 scene recently, as the folks over at PS3DevWiki have documented and released on how to dump the PS3 per console keys! For the newb what this does is basically replace the current function JB2 aka TrueBlue! In short once the keys for per_console_key_0 are found, it will basically fully unlocks the PS3 and grant as CFW access on basically ALL firmwares! This is great news for everyone in the PS3 scene and is only a matter of time before we have the keys!

Update: Please understand that this method is for dumping per_console_key_1, and per_console_key_n. In order to get CFW we need to dump per_console_key_0.

I barely understand it since I have almost no knowledge in that stuff, but whatever.

I don't get it either. Do I need to change my PSN info again? That's all I care about.

Nice. I don't have a strong interest in console cracking myself, but I can understand the entertainment value.

I can't wait to see sony's retaliation. I'm calling it here, sony will do something unbelievably awful like remove usb support.

Or Electricity support.

excellent. honestly it was when the ps3 was first got destroyed when i considered the idea of getting a ps3. the more it gets blown open, the better. and hey if sony improves on the PS2 emulator, even better! maybe they'll be able to hack the PS3 to be emulating PS2 discs while they're at it too. unless they already have. no idea. not my scene.

They can't remove USB ports otherwise you can't charge the controller. Or can you charge the controller with any other means?

I plug it in my PC since you have to leave the PS3 on for it to charge, it's stupid.

That doesn't sound like "completely cracked"--they'll get there when they can dump per_console_key_0, but they can't yet.

Speaking of which--I'm actually kind-of impressed. If it's only just on the verge of getting fully cracked, then they've managed to evade pirates for five years.

Pretty sure PS3 piracy has been around since like, 2008.

'fully cracked' here is basically something that just about never happens. it's been cracked to high hell for quite some time now, but this is basically them reaching into it deeper than the friggin' psp. >_>;

Nope, they've had piracy for... I don't remember when it was exactly, but I think it's been a couple of years. The difference is this one will work on current firmware, allowing new pirates and perhaps even letting you mod your PS3 while retaining full PSN functionality. I wouldn't count on the second one, though.

the second one has been somewhat doable on the PSP. but yeah. they haven't gone this far with other systems because they haven't tried or cared to. they didn't need to go this far to crack the Wii in general and it took quite some time until they stopped needing specific games or exploits from games and just made a simple item that cracked it. PSP was dead quick. nobody bothered changing anything for nintendo's handhelds because, similar to the wii, no need to. you can do whatever you want for far less. 360 ain't my field of expertise, but live is well known for lifetime bans if you mess with too much. but i also don't think it's ever been taken this far either. only other thing that comes to mind is the psp. which entirely is because sony kept trying so they just nuked the house to get the door open.

which sounds like what they're doing with the ps3.

I used to think this, but then I realized that it doesn't apply to the PS3.

Sure, the PS3 has been around for 5 years and has only recently had all these cracking developments, but really it's only because no hacker wanted to hack the PS3 until they removed OtherOS/Linux support. It was then (like 2 years ago) that people started hacking, and after that point, they hacked the PS3 faster than the Wii/360 or even PSP. They showed that Sony's security was really embarrassingly bad, and all the PSN hacking stuff is really not surprising.

it'll be interesting if they get to the point where you can have full PS3 functionality while playing pirated games. what we keep seeing from PC and various game consoles is that anti-piracy is never airtight. Valve has argued for a while that the way you stop piracy is by making things worth paying money for, not investing heavily in security that will be broken eventually. more evidence for their argument I think.

Yeah, there's like, zero reason to be impressed with Sony here. Piracy happened super quick. This is more... The system being broken completely open beyond the norm.

piracy happened not that quickly. well in any way that most people could do it. i'm sure piracy was doable through linux except nobody cared to since the linux guys were fine as is. then they got rid of it and within 3 months it was cracked wide open. from there, well... yeah. at this point they're planning to bury it hard. and i appreciate it!

360 is a mess, a mess for pirates that is. You needed a specific hardware (One prone to system failure!) and software version, then a hardware modification, or you had to connect the innards of the 360 up to the innards of a PC to flash the DVD drive's FW. The former didn't allow for XBL functionality and the latter didn't allow for full piracy/homebrew functionality. Now, I hear they're working on something new, but who knows how that'll turn out? In short, it's not a one-sided battle. I gather console piracy has been going on since at least the 16-bit era and it'll stay popular most likely, with various periods during which it's impossible on a given system.

Well it took off with the PS3 for an obvious reason. They never should have removed Linux to begin with. All that did was piss people off.
