And this is coming from a Christian. I believe in God, the ressurection, etc... but I understand that it improbable, mythical, and has no evidence to back it up. But I believe it purely on faith. I personally believe in evolution as well and that both ideas go together. I never get offended when someone tells me they don't believe, it makes more sense. I just choose not to use my sense in this case.

How can the two go hand in hand?

"I don't see how scientists can hate Australia."

But I'm totally agreeing with you.

Religion doesn't conflict with science, it's supposed to be on a higher level. The idea is that science is just the process of exploring our existence and taking notes about how things work.

Religion is about the stuff we don't know. If a christian god actually existed (it doesn't), it would absolutely make sense for it to be able to break the laws of physics at whim. It's the programmer behind the curtain/etc.

But I've also found that most christians around where I live don't believe in the literal bible, and just view everything as parable and interpretations of a more abstract entity.

It bothers me that some people believe that science and religion are somehow rivals, when they don't need to have anything to do with each other, or even compliment each other.

I mean, I've been taught in Catechism (school for Catholics to become a confirmed Catholic) that Catholics believe in evolution with one exception: Humans did not evolve from monkeys.

Lots of religious topics lately. Are you guys trying to bait people or what? Because it's working!

It bothers me that some people believe that science and religion are somehow rivals, when they don't need to have anything to do with each other, or even compliment each other.

On the whole, I'll agree (though this is an oversimplification; there is overlap, like it or not). The real schism today is between science and philosophy, since the former wants to eclipse the latter even while its claims to truth are metaphysical.

But they did.

Actually, they didn't. Humans and monkeys evolved from a common ancestor.

That said, I've always found the sheer arrogance of humans to believe that we're just so gosh-darn special that we couldn't possibly have evolved from animals to be quite off-putting. Feels out of step with Jesus's teachings to boot.

But they did.

Not really, we shared a common ancestor that probably doesn't exist anymore.

To be completely overlysimple. I believe in evolution, the big bang, all of that. I just believe that god came before that, and Jesus was the avatar of god

"Science can provide access to universal physical laws which bind the entire, infinite universe." -- scientists, talking about what they've uncovered from their infinitely limited human minds

Arrogance exists on both sides in stunning display.

Inception, when you say that you believe in evolution/the big bang, do you mean that you've studied evolution/big bang and then concluded that it was true, or do you trust that the scientists are being as truthful as they can be and you believe in them?

If it's the latter, would you be interested in learning more about either?

"Science can provide access to universal physical laws which bind the entire, infinite universe." -- scientists, talking about what they've uncovered from their infinitely limited human minds

We have a mathematical definition of that.

Are you saying the square of your own intelligence is zero?

I'm not sure if you're trying to be clever here, but feel free to clarify what the hell you're talking about.

I haven't actually seen the Kan academy's series on cosmology yet, but I have seen his other videos and he's decently competent at explaining other topics and relatively accessible.

There's a fairly concise summary of our current state of cosmology that I HAVE seen, but it was a lecture by a friend of Richard Dawkins IN an event that Dawkins himself hosts and he does make several unneeded snide remarks at religion, would you mind me posting that or would you prefer that I try finding something as good without the garbage?

Most of the blogs/videos I know of state evolution usually in terms of the evolution vs. creationism debate, would you mind that? I don't know of many which would serve as a decent introduction to evolution and aren't part of that debate.
