Its cool from an aesthetic standpoint. Steampunk evokes a sense of nostalgia as well, much like retro-futurism does.

Serious answer: I don't know why, exactly. But I do love it. Clockpunk's even better though- More or less the same aesthetics, but shinier and with more cogs.

Mentioned this in the movie topic I made, but why does nobody ever talk about Steamboy?
It's from the same guy as Akira, and it's almost as good of a movie, but nobody ever gives it any love. It's also by far the best steampunk movie that I can think of.
