christmas is a lot better than thanksgiving when you're a kid, but it's reversed now

thanksgiving is the best by a wide margin, especially now that the lions game will be competitive for once!

Do either Portugal or Spain celebrate Columbus Day? Do any of the Caribbean countries celebrate Columbus Day?

It is seriously the least sensible holiday.

Yeah, I had a hard time ranking New Year's Day, since technically New Year's Eve isn't included and that's the fun part of the holiday.

We should have pretended Columbus was born in mid-April or something. At least that would spread the holidays out more.

That's kind of fair, but if you're celebrating New Years Eve, are you really going to go to bed at midnight?

I'm pretty sure that I never had school on Columbus Day. I'm tracking poll updates on today's poll to see if there are any signs of an ASV.

Maybe it's different depending on where you live. I always had school, but my area is notorious for snow days so it may have been a preemptive "make-up day." Though even now that I'm in grad school, I have class later today.

You know, I really like my Early April Columbus Day idea.

We could just make it the Monday after we shift into Daylight Savings Time every year, to give people an extra day to adjust to losing an hour.

And it would make sure that we never have a gap of over 2 months without a federal holiday.

It's perfect!

although yeah potentially getting off on my birthday (april 11th) without having to use a vacation or sick day would be cool

it's the main complaint of the first post!

and you shouldn't be looking for a more efficient system of getting days off, you should be concerned with making sure that the mail always comes through!

karl malone was the mailman because he always delievered!

except in the playoffs

....maybe that was the joke!

I'm only a mailman for 6 more weeks, I really couldn't care less if the mail system stops.

Non-Federal Holidays that are superior to Columbus Day:
St. Patrick's Day
Easter (even for the non-religious)
Halloween
Christmas Eve
New Year's Eve

Columbus Day is really far down the list!

I looked at some of the past contest stats discussion topics from Columbus Day in 2007 and 2008. From what I found out in those topics, it's probably a statewide thing as to what schools have off on Columbus Day and which ones are in school that day. I never had school on Columbus Day and I live in Pennsylvania.

Also, based on the trends from the contest matches on Columbus Day in 2007 and 2008, Columbus Day trends are more similar to weekend trends than weekday trends, suggesting that more than half of all schools get off for Columbus Day. However, there are signs of an ASV on Columbus Day, suggesting that there is a large minority of schools (about 20% to 40% of all schools) that do have school on that day.
