Mario 64 proved 3d platforming could really work. it is still seen as a great game by a lot of people 15 years later. it was proof of concept of the N64. that seems to be an easy pick.
I put Ocarina of Time #1 even though it isn't directly influencing a genre or games, and I don't see much argument there.
I think SM64 is the most overrated game of all time, but it is one of the most essential 3D games (by any reasonable definition of the word). Not even I would deny that!

it just kind of stands over every video game. it is the 10/10 by which all others strive for. I guess I'd compare it to Mario 3 as far as the ultimate 3d game goes.

no.
OoT/WW/TP are one essential game, you just have to pick a version. MM stands alone as a 3D zelda title as an essential game that nintendo DIDN'T clone into oblivion

Oddly enough, I am somehow a huge fan of Mario 64 in spite of me not being a huge fan of Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. The most likely answer I can think of is that Mario 64 is less like other games in its series than Ocarina is.
mario galaxy is pretty much SM64 in space, it's just less offensive when mario does this than zelda because there is zero emphasis on story in mario, it's just a fun pick up and play platformer
