I only watch the show for Ted and Barney but is there anybody who actually dislikes Barney?

Ted has heart and I love it. He's quirky, he's imperfect, and it's fun watching him grow and learn lessons. I don't understand how people can like the show, but completely hate the main character and the (usual) focus of the story.

Barney and Marshall are equally amazing, but they would have nothing without Ted.

Oh great he is the David Eckstein of sitcoms.

Ted isn't supposed to provide most of the humor. That's what Barney and Marshall are for. Ted is supposed to provide the focus, and the reason for everyone being there. Maybe I'm just more invested into the storyline, and you guys are more invested into the singular episodes and moments.

Oh no, I love the storyline of HIMYM. I realize that Ted is supposed to be the relate-able straight-man of the group.

That doesn't make him any less insufferable when he opens his mouth.

While I will probably regret asking this question when I receive a post full of unnecessary hyperbole, why exactly do you hate Ted so much?

I wouldn't necessarily say female characters are terrible, just they seem terrible compared to the guys. Dee from Always Sunny isn't that bad, but seems worse because the other three of the gang are awesome. Similarly, Lily compared to Barney/Marshall. Robin is pretty cool though.

Agreed that Ted is terrible and the worst on the show.

Ted is disliked because not only is he not very funny, but he's also not very smart. That's a bad combination.

Dee is easily the worst on the show. All of the guys and side characters are pretty much completely better than her. Charlie, Dennis, and Frank are the best. Mac is usually good, but sometimes he's terrible.

I just find him annoying and lame. His nerdy tangents he goes on are cringe-worthy. When he suddenly switches up his act and tries to bro it up with Barney and Marshall, it comes off as incredibly unnatural and embarrassing. When he's interacting with women and tries to be charming or sexy, it's not convincing at all and is completely gross to watch. I think if someone more talented than Josh Radnor played him he'd be a much more likeable character.

It's been quite a while since I've watched the show, so my mind isn't completely fresh with specific examples, but yeah. I just do not like Ted at all.

Luckily the other 4 characters (and the overarching story/premise of the show itself) are filled to the brim with greatness.

Fair enough. I think his awkwardness is what makes him likeable. I can see myself relating to him as well, so that's probably also why I like him. I sometimes don't know what I want and try to fill different roles in life that I may or may not be a natural at. Maybe this isn't the intention of the writers of his character and that they intend for him to be a well-rounded individual, but that is what I pull from the character. He's a very imperfect character and I love him for it.

When you compare him to somebody like Barney (and NPH) who is smooth and wonderful at everything, it's awesome and hilarious and NPH is god, but it's not something I can relate to. And when I watch the show and finding myself caring about the story so much, I find myself wanting to insert myself into the story. I can do that with Ted.

But I love every character. Lily can annoy me a bunch and her character has seen a downgrade in my opinion, but I still wouldn't want to watch the show without her. Same with Robin. They only character I have ever truly hated that has been on the show is Stella.

Ted is irritating if only for the fact that he got to be project manager before he even turned 30. You're not that great of an architect Ted Mosby. Screw you.

Stella > Zoey so hardcore. Zoey wasn't all that great, but god she wasn't Stella. I can't quite put my finger on why I could stand Zoey but not Stella, though.

No, because Barney is actually as awesome as he thinks he is, Robin is nowhere near any sort of awesome..

So then you admit to being hypocritical. In the first part I bolded, you say you can't stand people that act like they're all that. Barney does this WAAAAY more than Robin.

But because you like Barney, it's okay there, but yet you list it as a reason that Robin's annoying.

I mean, Barney IS awesome, but if you hate "those kinds of people," then by all means his personality should be far, far more grating on your nerves than Robin's.

Okay then let me rephrase it, I hate people who think they're all that when they are far from it. Like a fat black chick I knew back in high school who thought she was the hottest girl ever. Yeah. I hated her. If she was actually the hottest girl ever and she acted like that, I probably wouldn't have minded.

Ted is good for the group as a whole. I think Ted's character adds more to Barney and Marshall, they'd be down lower without him. Lily and Robin.... Yeah they really don't add much at all. They bring nothing to Maclaren's besides their breasts.

Going back to the "good women on shows" discussion, Arrested Development's a good one for good women. Maeby and Lindsey both have their moments, and Lucille is possibly the best family member, period. Her dry humor is absolutely spot on, every time.

And on a very related note, Archer is also fantastic for women. Beside Lana.

Zoey was at least mildly entertaining and gave us THE CAPTAIN.

Stella gave us nothing but mediocre televison.
