And the 3DS is region locked, so importing could get pretty complicated. Then again, the Wii is also region blocked in theory...

The 3DS is only region locked for now because no one cares about it. Kinda like how the PS3 was the last to fall until very recently.

difference between Wii and 3DS though is that 3DS has logs that check for unofficial software and could potentially brick itself with firmware updates if those are detected in the logs.

although that won't stop hackers, but it's just another hurdle to overcome.
