Board 8 > RPG's with good job/customization systems

The WWYD topic with the random class FFV challenge got me kinda hankerin' for some FFV....but I've started that game about half a dozen times and never gotten halfway through, so I have no reason to expect otherwise for a future attempt. What are some other games where I can similarly set up a party and fiddle with classes or builds or such? Maybe even one I can randomize for the lulz?

Pick a Dragon Quest game.

I prefer 6's system, but you get access to 9's a good deal earlier (And 9 might be better for what you're looking for because of the way reclassing works)

I might actually dust off FFT. I have the same problem of starting and never finishing, but that's just because I like playing with builds and forget to advance the story. >_>

DQ has that kinda stuff? I've only played bits of V, VIII, and IX.

In 6 you can reclass at will with basically no penalties except some stat adjustements to fit your class. The class system is kind of separate from the characters themselves. I'd imagine that most of the older ones are like this.

In 9 you have to level each vocation from scratch and the class-specific level-up spells that you don't learn via skill points are lost when you re-class into something else. You can still reclass at will, but you're set back to whatever level you were in that vocation when you classed out of it. Skill Points are kept where you put them regardless of class and reclassing, though.

the Let Us Cling Together remake for PSP is tremendous, OB64 is a fantastic game, MotBQ is good to, and Knight of Lodis is uh... portable.

Wild Arms XF. Really nice job system with a lot of variety. Also has mission objectives that are more creative than "kill all enemies" or "kill the boss."

Yeah, Wild Arms XF is perfect for someone who wants a diverse, rewarding job system. Wouldn't really work for a randomized team playthrough (it requires you to be flexible with job choices from battle to battle), though.

also it goes without saying that NIS pretty much lives and breaths this kind of style.
as do a couple atlus games. PSP in general really can be a time sink in this. especially if you get Front Mission 3 on it. >__>;

Also Ogre Battle if you have never played it or you have only played it once. There are a lot of things you can do differently on subsequent playthroughs.

I dunno, Tactics Ogre doesn't seem to have a lot of customizations going for it, there's not a lot of abilities that you can transfer over between classes. Job system yes though.

Aww yeah WA XF job system. Get abilities up the wazoo to freely mix and match.
