A simile is like a metaphor, except it uses words like "like."

A metaphor is a simile that doesn't use words like "like" to compare them.

xkcd is hit or miss. Sometimes it's laugh-worthy, and sometimes just laughable. I usually enjoy it, though.

On topic, similes also sometimes use the word AS rather than LIKE. And that's actually an overly-simplistic way of explaining it, although it usually works for when you're first learning about them and trying to make one up. In essence, a simile is more of a direct comparison, whereas a metaphor is using symbology.

Simile: Because of her short arms and her aggressive nature, Jan's friends joked that she played poker like a T-rex.
Metaphor: Jan was a T-rex at the table -- aggressive and with arms that couldn't reach across the table.

Never read a web comic that's really done it for me. I also don't really like comics in general. I pretty steadily prefer to either watch or read for whatever reason -- both just don't mingle for me. They just... don't. I always wind up just reading and not paying attention to the art unless it's very, very striking and I end up missing half the story that way.

8-bit Theater was OK. But I grew tired of it around #30 or so and never went back. (I also have very limited patience for comics.)

I mean, if you've really tried and you just can't get over it...you know whatever, but when I first started reading manga jumping from anime, I had a similar problem where I just zoomed through text.

I've adapted and learned and I can definitely appreciate comics fully now.

Simile - Turning a topic about English into a topic about web comics is like a nice quiet discussion between a few people getting thrown off because a spider walks across the floor and causes everyone to freak the f*** out.

Metaphor - Board 8 has the attention span of a child.

I don't think what I said is silly at all. At least to me, hate implies an intense, passionate feeling of dislike. Thinking something is awful just means that I don't like it/get it on any level.

No, assuming by "Board 8" you mean "the Board 8 community", the latter is just a statement. (if you mean "Board 8, the portion of a computer system", that is a metaphor, but it means something completely different) There's a semantic element to metaphor as well: there needs to be a large gap in meaning if the statement is taken literally.

The problem is not that you don't grasp the difference between simile and metaphor. The problem is that you don't grasp the difference between metaphor and a run-of-the-mill statement.

"Board 8 is a bunch of hamsters chasing balls they're running into."

is a metaphor that would somewhat describe how you feel about this topic. (actually, it's probably some other small rodent (gerbils?), but you know what I'm talking about.) We OBVIOUSLY aren't a bunch of rodents (they can't type, for one), but the attention is the same in that it can be easily distracted.
