19. Finale (Glinda, Elphaba & the Citizens of Oz)

Listening to the soundtrack, it's very difficult to come up with any reason why this song shouldn't be dead last. I mean, first off, it has extremely fierce competition, and I would say it's tough for me to choose a favorite because there's just so many good songs in Wicked. Competing against some of the other songs on the soundtrack, Finale falls extremely flat, and that's because of reason number two: it's not even really a song. It's basically just taking clips of songs from earlier in the show (mostly from the second act) and stringing them together in the span of less than two minutes. It's more filler than anything else, unfortunately. And third, it's the last song of the play, essentially ending it. That alone leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth because I didn't want it to end, and in having this song as the ending, we were denied a REAL ending song from Elphaba/Fiyero, or just Glinda, or any sort of true "going out on a high note" sort of moment.

18. I'm Not That Girl (Reprise) (Glinda)

This one ranks low for a similar reason to Finale, in that I don't really care as much for hearing the same song I've already heard once before, especially when it's included as a unique song on the soundtrack. And to make matters worst for the reprise, it's less than a minute long. This means that they actually had to decide that not only was this song vital enough to include a second time on the soundtrack, but it was also vital enough at only 50 seconds to include. The other reason I don't particularly care for this song is the fact that it's Glinda singing it. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Glinda as a character (much) in the show, but when Elphaba sings this song, it actually feels realistic, like it suits her character. With Glinda, YES she's heartbroken that the man she loves doesn't love her and loves her best friend instead, but at the same time, Glinda's been built up as this self-absorbed, bubbly ditz through the entire show, and having her suddenly singing a song about how she's depressed, which Elphaba did better...it just doesn't do it for me.

17. Dear Old Sensored (Students)

There's two real reasons why this ranks so low. First off, I hate choir-type songs, because they generally feel like there's a complete lack of personalization or characterization. It's just the ensemble of characters not important enough to have big roles in the play getting their chance to sing a song before all the real stars come out and blow them out of the water. This will come up again soon, trust me. And the second reason I dislike the song is that it's probably the one song in the show that doesn't really bring anything to the table, plot-wise. I mean, I may hate them more, but both Finale and Reprise are characterization songs for Glinda as she first laments the loss of her fiancee, and then laments the death of her best friend while everyone else around her celebrates as though Elphaba's death is a great thing (despite them only thinking her to be wicked because people told them to believe that). With Dear Old S***, it doesn't really serve a purpose. It's just basically listening to people sing their school's anthem, which is normally boring (and the reason they never included the Hogwarts anthem in the Harry Potter movies). That's all it is, and it's not fun.

16. March of the Witch Hunters (Tin Man & Citizens)

Like I said in the Dear Old S*** entry, I hate choir songs, and this is another one of those...but more than that, it's just a bunch of chanting with a brief interlude from Boq, who has become the Tin Man. Chanting sucks in general, which is why at least one other song ranks low on this list as well. But chanting aside, that's fine. The citizens are being brainwashed by the people in power, so of course they're going to hate on Elphaba and want her dead. What pisses me off in this song is Boq's part. Because at this point, we get it. Everyone has turned against Elphaba despite her being the protagonist of the show and despite her basically doing everything in her power to help the greater good. But then Boq comes in and actively chastises her for SAVING HIS LIFE after her psychotic sister nearly killed him, and then chastises her again for rescuing a caged animal from a group of people that were harassing him, like she's a horrible person for doing either of those things. It's both frustrating AND rage-inducing, and it really doesn't make me appreciate this song at all.

15. A Sentimental Man (The Wizard)

Aside from Glinda's reprise, this is the shortest song on the soundtrack at a little over a minute in length, much of which is simply orchestral music. Honestly, the Wizard's songs aren't THAT great, because he's just NOT as good of a singer as Glinda or Elphaba, yet he's the only major character that really gets the chance to shine on his own (well, kinda). His two songs are both kinda quirky, and you can tell the kind of person he is by his voice. But the biggest problem with this song is that it comes between two of the bigger show-stopping numbers of the first act, and that makes it come across as filler. Like, they had One Short Day, but there was too long of a time between that and Defying Gravity, so they had to fill the void with music rather than just making the scene purely acting. And the other issue I have with this song is that, because it's so short and because it's so seemingly filler, it really gets overshadowed by the Wizard's other song, "Wonderful", which serves the exact same purpose, pretty much.

14. No One Mourns the Wicked (Glinda, Father, Mother, Mid-Wife, and Citizens of Oz)

Yeah, that's right, I just took out the opening song of the show. Deal with it. This song does set up the plot, but at the same time, I feel like it tries to do too much. It's the second-longest song in the show for the same reason the first-longest is so long, in that it basically encompasses a long scene, even when it doesn't necessarily include singing. It starts out with chanting and celebrating Elphaba's death, so already it has a strike against it for chanting. And then it kinda goes off the rails a little because you have Glinda show up and change the tone of the song right before sending it to a flashback, which changes it again several times. You see, they kinda have to change the singing tone for all the scenes shown in the flashback, so you have the more romantic song between Elphaba's mother and "father", then the jaunty song between her mother and real father, than the birth of Elphaba, complete with finding her to be green. Overall, the song itself is too much of a mish-mash of several different tones and styles and it's just not the kind of thing that I enjoy listening to. I mean, yes, it draws you in, but it's still not that great.

13. Something Bad (Doctor Dillamond & Elphaba)

And now we have the last of the songs shorter than three minutes in length. It's not a real surprise to me that the shortest songs were the easiest to cut out of the list, because they all share similar features when you think about it. Generally, the shorter a song is, the more likely it is the kind of song that could just be acted out in a scene, but because it's been a minute or two without singing, the script instead calls for it to be sung. And none of these short songs ever come in succession, they're just there to buy some time before a big number comes up. I like this song enough to put it above the rest of the crap (from the top twelve onward, we get to the decent or really good songs) because I liked the friendship between Dillamond and Elphaba due to their common experiences. But at the same time, this barely constitutes a song. Dillamond has a few lyrics at the start, but after that it's basically just him and Elphaba repeating "something bad happening in Oz" in a sing-song voice, interspersed with non-singing lines. It's just a bit pointless, IMHO.

12. Dancing Through Life (Fiyero, Glinda, Boq, Nessarose, Elphaba & Students)

The longest song in the show, it's somewhat hard to rank it because I do like it for what it is...but at the same time, it suffers from several of the issues that songs ranked lower than it also suffer from. First off, the length, like the other truly long songs in the show, is kinda padded by clumping a bunch of scenes together. And that means for seven minutes of showtime, you have this scene going non-stop as a song, rather than just straight-up acting, when really, quite a bit of it could be just plain acted out (Glinda turning down Boq and tricking him into going to the party with Nessa, for example, or Nessa talking about how she lovesBoq, or Glinda giving Elphaba the witch hat). I get that they were going for a theme of "oh, you're perfect for each other" with Boq/Nessa, Glinda/Fiyero, and Elphaba/hat, but it's just a bit too long. The actual singing parts when headed by Fiyero are quite good though, although they kinda turn out weird, given how much time they spend dedicating this scene of Fiyero being a frat boy type of character that loves Glinda, only to have that get reversed by the second act (hell, two songs later). But it's solid, if not great.

11. Wonderful (The Wizard & Elphaba)

I like this song for what it is, a way of humanizing the Wizard and kinda making him seem like a nicer person, which is needed, because he winds up NOT being the big villain of the show (well, he's still an a******, but he gets kinda redeemed at the end). It really comes down to the fact that I just don't care for him as a singer, the same way I don't really care for "A Sentimental Man". But Wonderful DID manage to do what Sentimental could not. It took the same "I always wanted to be a parent" message, but it also added an "I didn't want to be the Wizard, but people kinda just loved me, so how could I disappoint them" message to it. Plus, it was definitely needed to have a more upbeat and jaunty song in the second act, because the only other really upbeat and perky song of the act was the opening song, and even that had somewhat depressing undertones. So yeah, everything Wonderful is supposed to do, it does well, but it's just not as great as the top ten are, because it's solely supposed to be wacky without having the fun bubbliness of Glinda being involved.

10. Thank Goodness (Glinda, Morrible & Citizens of Oz)

The last of the six minute or longer songs just barely makes it into the top ten, but it definitely deserves the spot. Honestly, I enjoy all of the top ten and consider them to be a different tier from the first nine songs on the list. Thank Goodness starts with the same anti-Elphaba chanting that most of the longer songs do, but it does do a good job of introducing the second act (a far better job than Finale does of closing out the show). Really, up until this point, Glinda has either been part of an ensemble song, or her only real solo performance is more of a joke song, so she doesn't get the chance to show off her range as a singer AND an actress until this. Yes, the song is a little bit repetitive, but that's not so bad. What I really like about it is how Glinda keeps singing "I'm happy" almost as though she's trying to convince herself of it, when she's really not. The most powerful line is when she sings about how you can only be happy when your dreams come true, but she knows it came at the expense of her best friend, and even though she's a chipper singer, you can definitely feel the guilt in her voice when she sings. This song would be much better if it wasn't the intro to act two though, because those intro songs have too much unnecessary filler sometimes.

9. The Wizard and I (Elphaba & Morrible)

Yeah, Elphaba is most definitely the star of the show, and you can tell, given that, of the top nine songs in this countdown, she has a starring role in eight (in fact, all of her major singing roles are in the top nine, not including ensemble work, or minor songs). The lowest of the Elphaba songs is her first time in the spotlight with "The Wizard and I". While it's quite good, this song is hurt by being so early in the show. You can tell that they're still sort of establishing the characters, and this song isn't entirely sure what it wants to be, light-hearted or serious. You've got talk of Elphaba hoping the Wizard will turn her skin a normal color and basically making plans for how she's going to work everything out, not to mention the prophecy in which she pictures people celebrating her (not for the reason she believes, though). But at the same time, you can tell the song is still trying to be serious, with Elphaba working to actively improve herself and gain good favor with the Wizard. It's a little bit awkward...enough for me to rank this song lowest of the Elphaba octet.

8. I'm Not That Girl (Elphaba)

Yeah, it definitely sounds better to have Elphaba singing it than it does to have Glinda singing it. Once again, any song with Elphaba in a starring role is amazing, I can't deny that, because she's just such a solid singer, and you know that the song is completely in-character for her. The main reason it ranks low (although again, anything in the top ten is really good) is because I'm not a big fan of teen angst. Yeah, I get that she feels depressed because the guy she likes is in love with her best friend, and she's never really had feelings for anyone before because everyone treats her like a freak, but at the same time, it's just such a total cliche. Especially coming off the heels of a scene in which it's pretty obvious that Fiyero DOES like her back, even if she's completely blind to this fact. Add to that the fact that the song itself is a wee bit repetitive and I can only truly justify putting it into the top eight, but no higher.

7. One Short Day (Glinda, Elphaba & Denizens of Emerald City)

One Short Day is a really nice and light-hearted song (the last real ensemble song to come up on this list). It's a good way to kinda juxtapose one last positive feeling (where Elphaba feels accepted because she's green and the city is green) right before the scene in which everything goes wrong and Elphaba suddenly becomes a fugitive from Oz. It's catchy, and you can tell it's one of those songs that's supposed to be sung along with. It's definitely one of the big songs that you're going to remember and sing along with by the end of the show (the first act has a TON of these, because it's supposed to draw you in with the light-hearted nature before sending things to darkness in Act 2). But yeah, showing that both girls are happy to have found a place where they truly belong (especially Elphaba) is nice, especially with Glinda openly admitting that she and Elphaba are best friends, despite Glinda having her pick of whoever she wants...it's just a happy moment in the show. It misses the top six because it's an ensemble performance though, and it's just not as good as the rest.

6. Popular (Glinda)

Popular is a very light-hearted and delightful song that, like One Short Day, is memorable and easy to sing along to, which is always a plus when it comes to choosing which songs are best. This is also the last non-Elphaba song to be ranked, so it's got that going for it as well, being best of the leftovers, if you will. Really, while "Thank Goodness" is best for Glinda's acting skills, this is the song that truly puts her character traits on display. She decides to give Elphaba a makeover against her wishes for the sole reason that Glinda is just nice like that, and then goes on his singing spiel about how you don't need to be smart (which Elphaba is) in order to succeed, you just need to win people over...which is sadly true, given some of the presidential candidates and winners we've had in the past. Really, this song would belong in the top five, but there's only five spots for six songs, and Popular just doesn't quite fit in. It's still great though.

5. For Good (Elphaba & Glinda)

This entry may upset the two people following this thread, but let it be known that everything in the top five is amazing, and For Good just happens to land in fifth because it's a bit too repetitive towards the end without being the kind of repetitive that you can sing along with. Anyway, this is a really powerful song, because it's the last time Glinda gets to see Elphaba before she (Elphy) "dies". These are two girls who have grown to be close friends through the course of the show, and Glinda KNOWS that it's all because of her inability to stand up for what's right that Elphaba is being hunted, and will soon be killed. Elphaba, even knowing she's going to die, still manages to make amends with Glinda and basically tells her to avenge her death, basically forcing Glinda to grow a backbone and truly stand up for herself for the first time in the show, not allowing her to just float whichever way the wind blows in hopes that things will work out. It's a really good exchange, and it's heartfelt and emotional. It's a great way to end act two (which unfortunately, "Finale" ruins completely by killing any and all momentum).

4. No Good Deed (Elphaba)

This is yet another really powerful song that comes towards the end of the second act (one of the big three that establish character development of Elphaba). There's really two factors working to this particular song's advantage. It opens up with her trying to cast a spell in order to save Fiyero (which does save him by turning him into the well-known Scarecrow character from the original book), and eventually getting frustrated at the knowledge that she HAS no knowledge of what has become of Fiyero, regardless of her spell (she doesn't even know if it worked properly). This leads to the second part of the song, in which she thinks back on all the good she's tried to accomplish (helping her sister to walk, saving the animals, etc.), and how Fiyero saved her by sacrificing himself. She realizes that despite her efforts to be positive and helpful and working for the forces of good, the people who don't play by the rules and who are truly evil will beat her ever time, so she finally decides to accept her title of "Wicked" Witch. Now, she doesn't actually do anything nasty after that point, beyond *****ing Dorothy out (and admittedly, Dorothy did steal shoes that rightfully belonged to Elphaba). It's just great to watch that transformation and realization of a good person slowly going mad inside.

3. As Long As You're Mine (Elphaba & Fiyero)

This is truly a beautiful song, and it's the highest-ranking act 2 song for a reason (that reason being that act two was more about emotion and character development, whereas act one was more memorable and sing-along in its songs, which is a positive for me). Basically, it's the ONE time in act two when things finally kinda go Elphaba's way and she gets to be happy for once. After p****footing around the matter for several scenes, Fiyero and Elphaba finally run off together and although they don't get it on on-stage, let's be real, a girl like Elphaba wants, nay, NEEDS to get laid, so let's just say she and Fiyero bang like a pair of cymbals. And the song really shows that passion. And it's a double-sided passion, which is what really makes the song great. Like, if it was just Elphaba, then yeah, of course she's passionate. For her, it's the first time she's ever had a guy that she loves, and she actually has him and can't believe it's real. But for Fiyero, a guy that has been a total player, to feel the exact same way and have the same intensity...it really amps up the scene. Also, the placement of this scene benefits it, because it's really the LAST true happiness Elphaba gets, because next up her sister gets kills and her boyfriend sacrifices himself for her. It's really great.

What Is This Feeling #2? It's a good song, but Iunno.

Defying Gravity #1 is so cookie cutter as well...

I'm not very good at ranking the songs, it depends what I feel like too much. I basically have a bad, "ok", good and great sections. Too hard to sort completely, especially when the best songs are all incredible.

Defying Gravity at #1 is kind of cookie cutter. But. It's Defying Gravity. It should be #1 lol.

As long as Defying Gravity ends up at #1, I can pretty much accept your ranking. We differ in a few places, but we also agree in many general placements.

2. Defying Gravity (Elphaba, Glinda, Guards & Citizens of Odds)

This song is the face of Wicked, so for it not to rank first on this list...as Daniele Donato would say, "SHOCKER!" Really, the top two came down to the songs that have been stuck in my head (in a good way) for months. The two songs that got my hopes up for seeing the show last night, and in the end, Defying Gravity is certainly amazing, and was a great way to end the first act. It's got a very similar upbeat tone to it for a lot of the song, in keeping with most of the songs from the first act, but at the same time, it's very serious and sets the tone nicely for the second act, with Elphaba and Glinda departing ways, Elphaba going to take the hard road while Glinda cannot give up the potentially cushy life she has waiting for her. Really, the only reason this song doesn't take the top spot is that for one thing, the really catchy part takes about two minutes to reach (it's the longest song that isn't over six minutes), and for another there are several sections which aren't so much singing as conversation between Elphaba and Glinda. But once Defying Gravity hits its stride, it really does become an amazing, show-stopping number, deserving of a top two finish.

1. What Is This Feeling? (Elphaba & Glinda)

I hate the official title of this song. The official title should totally be "Loathing". But noooooo, they had to make it all complicated and have punctuation and everything. Loathing is the most fun and memorable song of the entire show, lyrics-wise, and that's what makes it awesome for youtube videos, because it's a subject matter that doesn't have to apply strictly to Wicked, and can actually apply to any two girls that just happen to hate one another. The back-and-forth between Glinda and Elphaba in this scene is fun and light-hearted despite them absolutely hating one another, and hell, even when Glinda has an entire choir of fellow S*** students come to back her up by saying Elphaba is an awful roommate (which, btw, way to be racist, entirely white cast of characters), Elphaba can stand her ground and sings right back at them, making it seem much more like an equal exchange rather than making Glinda come across as a bully, which she legitimately could be at this point in the show. Finally, what really makes this song stand out is its placement in the show itself. Prior to it, we've had the introductory song, which my thoughts are already clear on, Dear Old S***, which was lame, and Wizard and I, which while good, is a bit awkward because to me, Elphaba soloing really works from Defying Gravity onward, when she's matured and gained some self-confidence. Pairing her up with Glinda for this song works wonders to really get the show started. Definitely a worthy first placer.
