because HP is getting out of the WebOS hardware market officially, they need to get rid of inventory. Phones and Tablets both are in that - and the main objects in that - which results in those being sold.

The HP Tablets we're talking about came out a month and a half ago.
The phones vary. One also is a month ago, and was at $50 unlocked (I missed this DAMMIT that would've been so good).

So come tomorrow, get online, go to your stores (not Fry's, Best Buy will have 'em), do whatever it takes if you want 'em, because a 16GB tablet with a dual core processor going for $100 is fantastic. 32GB for $150 ditto. Just in time too seeing how in October they're rolling out quad-core tablets, but even then... $100? 16GB? $160, 32? Not happening.


downside, no SD slot. upside, 16 or 32GB, what's that for.

actually wait. the 32GB one still is in stock from the site. and you need a school email (not necessarily a student - alumni's fine).
the other big sale in that from HP's site is that the coupon codes work on 'em too. people are just waiting to see the shipping confirmation though, myself included. hell, the your order's compete confirmation. so... really, 16GB for $99 - $15 + tax. ....yeah.

The browser is terrible and it's an unsupported platform. Maybe if you're going to use it for its kindle, facebook, and photoviewing apps it's alright, but it's a doorstopper unless someone ports android over to it for some crazy reason.

I cannot stress enough how terrible the browser is after using it for a few weeks. It's painfully slow.

but you're wrong in saying it's an unsupported platform; WebOS will still be supported in the short term at least. the hardware is gone, the software is not. Palm cost them way too much and WebOS is too simple and useful of a software to not be used. support in the same was as before? nah. but there'll be some without a doubt for a while.

that said, everyone fully intends to wait a bit, root it, and put Android on it. >__>;

There are not millions of hp touchpads on the market. Best buy does not have just 10% of all hp touchpads made, ever. What's the benefit of putting android on an inferior tablet? Who's going to do it? I don't see the motivation of someone hacking a $100 tablet just to get android on it when they could spend a few hundred dollars more and get a proper, supported android tablet.

Putting money down on a touchpad is not the worst thing ever. There are some okay apps available, though not many, and it'll work alright as an ereader that also supports comics. I don't see hp supporting webos for much longer. They're already writing off a billion dollars on this thing, and announced they're discontinuing webos, so i think most people should look at any optimistic news coming from hp about webos with a sceptical eye. I'm not saying don't buy it, this thing is terrible. I'm just saying it's not the best sale ever.

Maybe the homebrew community will take off on this thing. Maybe they'll stop at getting doom to run. If i were looking to get a tablet cheap, though, i'd look at a used/refurbished ipad 1.

well if app support's what he means then yes, it's not gonna get a whole lot right now as that's the biggest flaw WebOS has. and... from the looks of it Best Buy's shipping their stuff back to HP, as really they're cleaning out their warehouses which we don't know how many exist in that, but thinking they created a million or two isn't really any stretch of the imagination - if Best Buy doesn't even have 10% then even more so.

and if you don't see why someone would hack this then...i'm not sure you understand too much about the hacking community in general. or fanboys. or cheapasses. or the fact that when you combine all 3, you tend to get a lot of people which this fit pretty much perfectly. people hack cheap things because they're cheap. WebOS is based off of Linux, so it's not even like the damn thing is impossible to tweak around. (edit: and you know just how many linux fanboys there are just by reading gaming news in the past couple months.)

they announced discontinuing WebOS hardware is the part that you aren't getting. that's the main thing they got from their purchase of Palm, and is what they'll try to milk, put in other products all around, sell off to retailers, etc. they're gonna whore it out instead of keeping it just in their products since... there's no product to keep it in. in the worst case scenario, WebOS would end up getting sold off to Google or Apple so some of its quirks can be used as well. probably Google.

this was them selling off their entire inventory of Palm related products, so tablets and phones (still gonna try to get a Palm Pre 2). for now they're still in the computer market and probably will be for a while - that's a field they're probably gonna switch over like IBM did to Lenovo.

you can still TRY to buy 'em. HP Small business is selling 'em, they'll be getting a ton back into their warehouses as well since some retailers (most) don't want to even try this on. woot might have some as well soon as they're basically amazon throwing stuff away.

yeah, the unfortunate thing about small business is that it's very unstable and unrelaible right now. try multiple browsers - Firefox, Chrome, Opera. you may get some success with a different one. not sure if they list paypal on it but if they do, avoid that. straight checkout through 'em is the only way to do it.

order being verified means 'we got a lot of orders and have a lot of stock coming in so when we get the stock and update the systems we'll see if we have some for you or not.'

had one of those earlier myself. which model is it? if it's the 32GB model then i'd say your odds are quite good because those arne't the one selling like hot cakes - the 16GB model is. makes sense since figure, most won't use the extra 16GB anyway and at $100 it's pretty perfect for a toy that's easy, simple, and will be hacked to hell and back. even then, it just depends on when you got it. focus less on emails and cards as that's unreliable, and more on your order status. that one tells you something. a card being charged can easily just be a card being credited it back.

<_< well do remember that most retailers are shipping their stuff back. what newegg and amazon are doing is currently unknown. personally i'd honestly force a bundle to make some of the difference if i was any of these guys - buy a 16GB tablet + keyboard + case + screen protector for $200 or something to that effect. the markup on the accessories is enormous in the first place and will only proceed to go up from third parties, so it'd be a way to both pre-empt that and cut the losses from this firesale.

there's a cut being done somewhere in there, but said cut is something that amazon and newegg both seem to be talking to HP over. amazon looks like they'll have the tablets drop in price, but are doing.... something behind the scenes with HP. they've got it all ready, but are just waiting right now.
