That's not the problem, the story just sucks. Nothing has been interesting in the slightest. Fraction is a good writer, but I don't know what he's doing with this.

Fear Itself just seems to be set-up. All the interesting plot developments and character interactions happen in the tie-ins Invincible Iron Man, Hulk, and Journey Into Mystery, and now it looks like it just setting up more bulls*** 12-issue limited series.

I've skipped pretty much every Fear Itself tie-in unless it's actually part of the ongoing I'm reading and I don't intend to go back.

how does the story suck? the avarice and paranoia of the gods leads to their potential demise, and humanity is caught in the crossfire. it's Flashpoint if you take away time travelling, multi-dimension hopping shenanigans. the problem is that the heart of the story is the fallout on earth -- how heroes react, how humanity suffers, how we cope with total abandonment of the gods -- is largely ignored in Fear Itself in favour of hammer smashing. when something happens in Fear Itself, like the death of 'that guy,' that's supposed to strike an emotional chord, it falls flat because there's no consequences for those involved that we can see. everything is happening in tie-ins rather than the main book.

the story isn't the problem. the story is quite compelling, actually. the effectiveness of the storytelling is where Fear Itself ultimately fails.

Wait, What?: Because of shenanigans, everyone’s favorite Green-Lantern-fallen-from-grace has now returned to grace and is the star of the show. No one knows why, no one can change it, and that’s premise of the series. Why is this happening? Who or what was the force that chose Sinestro to once again be worthy of bearing the most powerful weapon in the universe, and why would it choose one of the greatest menaces the universe has ever known to protect it? And above all else, what does this mean for the future of the Green Lantern Corps?

The Creative Team: The current Green Lantern franchise is still Geoff John’s child, and he continues to raise it into his own, shaping its future permanently. This is the guy who has been writing Green Lantern for seven years now, shaping the mythos and making it into one of the most successful and acclaimed franchises in comics. Geoff Johns IS Green Lantern. And in terms of the saga thus far, it’s been fantastic at his high points and merely good to “okay” at its lows. Seeing as how Sinestro is both one of John’s favorite characters and has a strong fan following, this looks to be one of the high points.

Doug Mahnke (pronounced like the Pokemon) and Christian Alamy are doing artwork and I honestly don’t have much to say about them. They did the art for the portion of Blackest Night that was published in the Green Lantern series itself. It’s a great style that suits the Lanterns perfectly. Great choices!

Ease of Entry: I have good news, and bad news. The good news is that now is an excellent time to be a Green Lantern fan. The bad news is that it’s kind of an awful time to just be getting in to the franchise. While most heroes are getting relaunched and rebooted with a bunch of easy entry points, the creators have come out and said that of everybody, Batman and Green Lantern are being changed the least. Even if there are some “recap” moments for new people (he does plan to do a Secret Origin arc for Sinestro later on), Geoff Johns has been building up to this for a while, and to see WHY Sinestro has a ring and WHY he’s one of the most popular characters, you’re better off reading the story thus far. Good news again! I can tell you exactly what you’ll have to read!

GET TO IT

Recommendation: In all seriousness, this is probably going to be a great book. The only problem with it is the easy of entry above. It’s more like another chapter in a series rather than a new beginning (though it could be both). If you’re feeling adventurous, jump right into it! If you’re worried about continuity, don’t rule it out entirely quite yet. I mean, hey. When Johns first started his run with Green Lantern: Rebirth, he had to make sense out of years of comics history. Hal Jordan’s character was honestly pretty much a mess. The point is, that was also a starting point that wasn’t newbie-friendly at ALL, and Johns made it work. Either way, I HIGHLY recommend reading Green Lantern v4 and Green Lantern Corps v2 however you can at some point. Maybe pick up an issue or two of this series first and see if it interests you. If it does, then definitely dive into the backstory. Whichever starting point you pick, this is a series new comic readers NEED to check out.
