The Phoenix Cave is sort of the coup de grace of the World of Ruin, a sort of "saving the best for last" thing for me. But I'm going to try to beat the dragons, Doomgaze, do the necessary sidequests (Cyan's Doma sidequest), and then move on. -- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. There's no real "flow" to the story at this point. You're basically getting Edgar, Setzer, and whoever else you feel like back before you fight Kefka (who doesn't even make an appearance in the second half of the game until the very end when you fight him).
