I seriously do not understand the difference.

People who claim that Obamacare is the first known instance of the government forcing you to purchase a product are simply lying. Social Security Insurance is a product (retirement insurance) that you are forced to purchase via the government assuming you collect any income whatsoever.

Because social security is politically popular enough that any politician who attacked it would be committing metaphorical suicide.
Opposing the individual mandate is 'popular' for Republicans, so Republican politicians will do just that.

You seem to be implying that political positions are actually based on a series of coherent ideological principles in which case AHAHAHAHAHAHA oh man that's a good one
