Covenant is the only one I didn't bother with. Played the first one, hated it. Ignored 2 for being a direct sequel. Gave SH another try with 3, hated it. Figures the one I skipped would be in this <.<

"Middle Child Hates Tomato Sauce And Loves Disco", for example, is not a trope, even if three examples of it could be found.

SH1 isn't for everyone. It's more of an old-school PS1 JRPG type. It's got a better atmosphere and characters than 2 so some prefer it. 2 is more well-rounded, much higher production values, much better gameplay, but some of the charm gets lost (not that it doesn't have its own charm). 3 is crap.

And yeah, I think SH1 is pretty bad and can't blame anyone for not taking to the series after that. I quite like 2 and 3 but 1's gameplay feels incredibly dated (and the plot is initially promising but seriously misfires at points in the first half, and then pretty much fails it up in the second half).

That said if someone disliked both 1 and 3 I find it unlikely they'd like 2? Well, maybe. It does have clearly the best plot in the series, for what that's worth, even if half the cast is still a bunch of unfunny gimmicks as is always the case for SH games.

Shadow Hearts 2 strikes the best balance of the series.

SH1 = charm, mediocre gameplay
SH2 = some charm, great gameplay
SH3 = negative charm, great gameplay

SH2 has Yuri, a great setting, and some nice music. That's about all it has over SH1, but it's still a good game.

Much better gameplay, and I honestly prefer SH2's cast to SH1's.

Give me Karin, Anastasia, and Joachim over anyone SH1 has to offer who isn't named Alice or Albert Simon.

SH3 has a more entertaining non-Yuri cast than SH2! The problem with SH3 is that it doesn't have a good hook that keeps you interested in the story. There's some interesting stuff toward the end, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the game. The humor works more in SH3 than it does in SH2.

Alice is great, yeah, but the rest of the cast is pretty blah. I like Keith and Margarete, but they're just...there. HM's gonna hate me for this, but I don't really like Zhuzhen either! And of course, there's Halley.

Yeah, SH2 has Lucia, but the rest of the cast is for the most part serviceable and likable.

SH2's cast didn't do much for me -- Karin was decent at best, Lucia was bad, Anastasia was annoying, Kurando is whatever. Joachim is good, I like him, but he's the only notable non-Yuri character. Yuri's strong enough to make up for the rest of the group, though. SH1 had Alice, Simon, Zhuzhen (best), Margarete, Kawashima. Keith and Halley aren't so good.
