When you look at the game objectively do you still think it's really good? I have little to no nostalgia for the game and as a result think of it as a regular JRPG on par with Secret of Mana in quality. Do you guys think it's so great because of nostalgia goggles or do you actually think it's the best in your heart of hearts?

Jeff Zero posted... Didn't play it until 2002 after a whole slew of excellent JRPGs; still give it a 9
I played it even later than this, like 2004, never even heard of it during the SNES era I found out about it and played it on emulators when I got into RPGs. still an excellent game
I don't think there's a way to look at entertainment objectively. To come to an objective conclusion we'd all have to agree on the standards it'd be measured by. Goes for games, music, literature, and wrestling matches.
I appreciate Chrono Trigger because it has all the things I like about jRPGs and skips on the things I don't, while being really efficient in gameplay and storytelling. It's a nice charming ride through time without any boring parts or melodrama. The dungeons are just as long as they need to be, the battles are quick. I'm always having fun while I'm playing the game and I can't say that about a lot of RPGs.
Yeah, SoM is the bomb for sure, but it does have some pretty huge flaws, most notably the AI of your party members. They oftentimes have absolutely no idea where to go and will get stuck behind walls or injure themselves. I beat the game in the 90s but when I tried playing it last year it was more frustrating than fun. Why do I still like it when it has so many problems? This is why.

I think it's pretty decent, but I only played and finished it around a year ago. It's a fun game, but there are a lot of JRPGs I enjoy far more than it. It wouldn't even make it into my Top 5 Square RPGs.
Looking at it objectively, I find that the casing is comprised of a grey plastic. There is a label affixed to the cartridge in such a way that you can easily tell which game it is by either looking at the top of the cartridge, where the name is printed, or by looking at the front, where there is some art and again, the title of the game. Upon inspecting the back of the case one sees a few small screws, used to hold the front and the back of the cart together. The bottom of the cartridge is empty, with some sort of microchip poking out, which is read by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System upon insertion.
That's my objective view of Chrono Trigger.
