I think the hardware cost alone is the $101 figure I see a lot. I think that enough goes into construction and distribution and advertisement and everything else that Nintendo is making a *slight* net loss, but the selling out will help to ease that loss.

Yay, though! More 3DS sales means more street passes for me, and I'm almost done with the puzzles and Find Mii stuff. Comic-Con netted me a solid 105 passes, which was nice.

I still think that regardless of whether they're profiting or taking a loss, it's pretty damn close to breaking even, though.


This is basically the Sony/Microsoft approach of "Sell as many units as possible so they all buy the still overpriced games so we still make money" as far as I can see

That's usually how it goes -- sell hardware at a loss, make it up through software. That's not typically Nintendo's business model, though, which is why it was such a big deal a couple of weeks ago. Eventually, it'll start being profitable, but it isn't there yet.
