I've been playing the Golden Spiral player level and got to the first trinket. I see that there's a spike missing in this room, but I decided I wanted to get to the trinket "legitimately". Here's a map of how far I've been able to get:

 Turns out there wasn't anything up there besides a trip back to the bottom, and I'm not that crazy. At this point I'm satisfied just taking the trinket the easy way and going on with the stage. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Nah, the spike isn't there on purpose, the creator himself said he forgot to fix it on the VVVVVV forum
