hey Leon I say you set up Chrono Trigger vs Umineko for the next rivalry week because I want to see if Chrono Trigger can keep up its great RPI plus B8 has loved both games at one point so it would be a great match
-- thelefty for analysis crew 2008 imo -tranny I have a third degree burn in flame-o-nomics -Sir Chris
I oppose CT vs. Umineko on the grounds that Umineko will hurt CT's SOS to the point that it would probably need to win with 100% of the vote to maintain its RPI.
I feel rivalry shouldn't mean SFF. As a general rule, I'd like to put fanbases that dislike each other together in rivalry matches.....Nintendo vs. Square is of course our biggest rivalry, and Old vs. New is pretty good too.
Eh, some of the more heated discussions are going to be "Which game in the series is the best one?" so they make more natural and better rivalries, honestly.

"I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now."
Well, there's just no vitriol, no passion, in the Mario series debate at least. There is some in the Zelda series debate, but even there, I feel like most of the debate on it on this board is due to you and LMS. Same with Final Fantasy- people have a favorite Final Fantasy game, but they don't see the others as the enemy, which is what rivalries are all about.
FF debates used to be passionate, but as Square has lost relevance on this site, they've really quieted down. I haven't seen FFVI fans trash VII in any big way in years.
Eh, you're not in the right topics if you don't see some passionate FF debating from time to time.
Besides, this "vitriol" you want is largely non-existent during the offseason because it's usually contest newbies who come to the board complaining about how the game beating the game they like sucks.

All right, let's check how Nintendo vs. Square/Enix is going this contest (note that I'm counting Super Mario RPG as Nintendo, and I'm pretending like FR/LG was never in this contest):
Week 1 Star Fox 64 > The World Ends With You Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance > Nier The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess > Kingdom Hearts II Super Metroid > Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride Professor Layton and the Unwound Future > Star Ocean: The Second Story

Week 2 Star Fox 64 > Final Fantasy VIII Super Smash Bros. > Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride Super Metroid > Star Ocean: The Second Story
Chrono Trigger > The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Nintendo wins, 3-1, and is overall winning by 8-3
Week 3 Super Mario 64 > Chrono Cross Super Mario Bros. 3 > Final Fantasy VII Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow > Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy IX > Mario Kart 64 Final Fantasy Tactics > Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards Nintendo wins, 3-2, and is overall winning by 11-5
Week 4 Paper Mario > Kingdom Hearts Super Mario 64 > Final Fantasy VIII
Chrono Trigger > Mother 3 Final Fantasy IX > Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum Nintendo and Square tie, 2-2, and Nintendo is overall winning by 13-7
Week 5 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time > Final Fantasy VII Fire Emblem 7 > Final Fantasy Tactics Super Smash Bros. Melee > Final Fantasy X The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past > Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger > Super Mario Bros. 3 Nintendo wins, 4-1, and is overall winning by 17-8
Week 6 Super Mario Bros. 3 > Xenogears The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess > Star Ocean: The Second Story
Final Fantasy VIII > Elite Beat Agents
...I'm stopping here because I don't have the will power to continue further.

Well, dang. Zelda:WW's record is pretty trashed now. It had excuses for its first three loss, but it's fourth loss today is its worst. Still, the Wind Waker defeated Metroid Prime, Majora's Mask, and Okami, so its overall resume is decent.... nothing convincing, of course.
Success: I'm loving how RE4 > MGS3 has been firmly established now after arguing through (at least in the weekly voting) for many weeks. Maybe RE4 could end up in 3rd....or 2nd... I wouldn't mind seeing it end up #1.
Failure: Ouch, Star Fox 64.... why did I ever rank it above #20? Yet, its loss to MMX actually felt expected before the match even took place. Say goodbye to FF6... THIS is the new wildcard of the season!
On to the RPI rankings... FFIX is ranked #6 in the RPI now. I suppose it moved up 2 spots because of MMX's victory. Well, dang. Something's gotta take FFIX down to earth. FFIX is becoming the new Galaxy 2 here. Oh, and I mentioned bringing FFX down to earth with a loss.... I meant a loss to a game that's below the top 10.

"Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."
You all won't be so high and mighty when MGS3 beats RE4 in the upcoming Rivalry Week!
But FFIX has a high RPI because it's beaten a lot of good (though not any great, no wins over a top 25 game) games. It only has two matches against games with a losing record, although it's got Halo 1 and GoldenEye the next two weeks, so that'll change.

Yeah, Wind Waker losing to Portal wasn't a bad loss. Portal got beaten handily by MGS1, sure, but MGS1 is proving it's a legitimately strong game week by week. I don't think this makes either game look bad. It makes them both look pretty solid, really.
So Twilight Princess suffers a narrow loss to Final Fantasy VIII, but Wind Waker is only four votes away from upsetting...Portal. Looks like we know who's stronger now!

It only took us 8 years to figure out that Wind Waker was the problem. You'd think Nintendo would have started feeling the effects by 2005-6, but that was when the DS and Wii took off as huge successes. Looks like Wind Waker, like Brawl after it, was a cancer that took deep root and did not bear dark fruit until long afterwards.
UltimaterializerX posted... Wind Waker ruined Nintendo and should be 0-12 with no votes cast for it in any match. No game has ever submarined an entire company faster than Wind Waker destroyed Nintendo.
Thank GOD Portal won that match. Good, innovative, charming gaming should always triumph over awful garbage.
How could the only top tier Zelda game aside from A Link to the Past destroy Nintendo? Although then again I'm not such a huge fan of the N64 Zelda games so maybe I shouldn't be talking.

No, Wind Waker was a new life for Nintendo if anything. It would be the best game in the series if it weren't for HEY YOU HAVE TO GRIND FOR HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY AS PART OF A FETCHQUEST at the end. And Brawl would be the best Smash game if it weren't so sluggish.

red sox 777 posted... Don't worry LMS, no one else understands Ulti's logic on this one either.
This rises entirely out of Ulti's impossible expectations for the franchise. According to him, the Zelda series was once the best in all of gaming, which can't possibly be true. You have two games released in 1987/8, a dormancy period until 1992/3 which again only saw two games, and then 1998, which sees a remake of a 1993 game and, oh, OCARINA OF TIME. Then we wait until 2000:
2000 - new N64 game 2001 - new GBC game (shut up I count the Oracles as one game) 2002 - remake that ships with multiplayer-only quest 2003 - yeah
I don't see anything here that suggests "best franchise ever".
And last time I played through The Wind Waker I DID go in expecting overrated trash.

Lol GameFAQs. And that took place AFTER Wind Waker anyway.
With Smash Bros. and 3D Zelda, I don't at all understand how someone could say that one entry in any of those DESTROYS the other entries considering how they all play similarly to each other (well, only within their respective franchises).
