While on one hand, part of this should encourage the studios to not spend so much money on franchises when it come to allegedly adult/all ages fare, I can't imagine this many people saw ads for The Smurfs and excitedly bought tickets to go see it.
The problem with The Smurfs, like most movies that attempt to the something similar, is that they strip it of its original brand by "Taking them to the BIG city! DURP!"
Couldn't they have kept the Smurfs in their village, with another storyline against Gargamel, and just made something fun/cool out of it? I mean, I just hate when they try to modernize the classics to that end. Maybe that's just me..

this sounds horrible actually
then again Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara makes me wanna see this
The Smurf's is a kid's movie. Those do well fairly often. You have parents taking their kids to go see it as well as adults going to see it because they're nostalgic. And of course others who want to see it because of the high profile voice actors.
I don't see why this wasn't expected, but I do want to see Cowboys & Aliens and I'm sure it'll be awesome.
