When I was in highschool 1995-1999, it was just when Rent had come out and EVERYONE was f***ing obsessed with it. It was the "cool" thing to love it and everyone was cool. I couldn't stand it. I've carried that with me since then. The wife absolutely loves Rent and saw it a bunch of times. I've slowly began tolerating the music but I still cringe a little.
OK, my Top 5 list (subject to change if I think of something else)
Jesus Christ Superstar A Chorus Line Evita Chicago Les Miserables (though Rent could be here)
Honorable Mentions:
Ain't Misbehavin' (Awesome Fats Domino show. Get the album with Nell Carter) Billy Elliot (saw it twice with two different kids playing Billy) Company (not my favorite soundtrack, but amazing production) Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (saw this in Vegas, they had an incredible Elvis) ^_^ Next To Normal (simply excellent all around) Little Shop of Horrors (fun to see on stage, Steve Martin is still the best Dentist ever) Phantom of the Opera (classic) Rent (saw this twice as well) Sunset Boulevard (I saw Glenn Close play Norma Desmond in this. Fabulous. Very underrated show and soundtrack)

oh man, Wicked. Haven't seen it but they would play commercials for it on the radio and they would play some of a song where it just sounded like the woman was screaming her lines and it was AWFUL. Wife and I are in agreement on this one.

It is a good show. My mom also loves it because she went to school with the author of the book.
But one summer I had a student that would come into lab and sing the freakin' thing all day long. One day she then had the audacity to also throw the soundtrack into the CD player. That was quashed right quick and officially ended the Summer of Oz, but the whole event still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I hate being mean to people, but this was by far the most annoying, immature student I've ever had and she really soured that musical for me. :P

I'm disappointed that I missed seeing 'An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin' they were in Jersey like a year ago and I totally passed it up like an idiot.

Oh that would have been fabulous!
There was also an All-Star cast who put on a couple shows of Company earlier this year that I so very wanted to see. Take a look at this freakin' cast:
Patti LuPone Martha Plimpton Anika Noni Rose Neil Patrick Harris
Once in a lifetime opportunity and I missed it. =(

and speaking of not seeing things. I just looked up tickets for Mormon again. $69 for a seat in the very last row of the mezzanine but if you want to get even 3 rows closer it shoots up by like $100. O_o
Like Matt and Trey don't already have enough money.
I've always thought Wicked was a bit overrated, myself. I feel about Wicked the way a lot of people feel about Rent (which is a show I love): I *like* it, but I don't love it, and I'm confused by the people who do. I love hearing Kristin Chenoweth sing any part, and I really like Idina too (in certain roles, anyway), so I listen to the recording from time to time, but about half of the songs are good (No Good Deed and What Is This Feeling being particularly awesome standouts) and about half are pretty blah (Wonderful is the most annoying song ever).
That said, check Kerry Ellis' version of Defying Gravity for something jaw-dropping:
I was introduced to Kerry Ellis as Svetlana in the concert recording of Chess and she blew me away. She's...damn good.
I am so goddamn sick of Rent. I was in a production of it a couple years ago, and I'm so sick of it. If you think about it, it's a bunch of terrible people complaining about the dumbest things.
I went to NYC in May to see some stuff. Mostly plays (I got to see Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, and Keifer Sutherland, among others), but the best thing I saw was Book of Mormon. Exactly as funny as I thought it would be.
yoshi, you saw the show that kiefer did with Jim Gaffian and Chris Noth and those other two guys whose names are escaping me? I really wanted to see that but just didn't make it happen.
