26. As an expat living in New Orleans, it is a very long list but "burglarize" is currently the word that I most dislike. Simon, New Orleans

It's funny because a few weeks ago voltch said "burgled" and I remember me and whoever else we were talking to just went "wait what"

I never got the English pronunciation of 'w'

I mean 'double u' okay I get it but why call it that when every single other letter has a unique name that has one syllable. Looks more like a 'double v' anyway most of the time!

edit: Probably something coming from the earlier days of English I guess. Maybe the 'w' didn't exist then, I dunno? I should know this as I study the language but whatevs. Either way in Dutch we pronounce it 'way'

That isn't really an americanism. It's no different than curtains/drapes, or pavement/sidewalk.

I will never understand how the term "I could care less" makes any sense.

What if someone yelled at me about how I didn't care at all about something, and I sarcastically replied "I could care less, if that would make you happier"?

Biweekly (and bimonthly, for that matter) are stupid because each can mean both. Neither word deserves to exist!

Also what do you Brits call a train station?

EDIT: On consideration, Railway Station, but eh, people call it train more than anything.

If the British term uses more syllables than the American term, it fails. No need to waste all that time.

And yes, this means 'lift' is better than 'elevator', I'll freely admit that. But for the most part the British to say things in a more complicated way than it needs to be said.

This is a long shot, but other than this I have no sodding idea.

He lives in London so presumably he used London Underground. A lot of Londoners would say "I'm going from Kings Cross to Alperton" instead of saying "I'm going from Kings Cross train station to Alperton train station".
It's a pathetic reason but it is the only possible explanation I can think of =/

What's wrong with 'for cheap'? It sounds perfectly natural to me... I'd be more inclined to just say that it was cheap rather than that I got it for cheap, but it still doesn't sound wrong.

Just generalizing and throwing out stereotype (since the same is done in reverse), but from what I've seen of most "white" European countries that speak heavy English, they have a ton to say about Americans, even though they've met none, or a few. The cause of our country being so huge.

The reason that American's would say "for cheap" rather than "cheap" is because the latter is grammatically incorrect.

"Could care less" is bad but I find "It is what it is" to be truly horrendous.

Bi-weekly is a stupid complaint because bi-weekly fits with the system for every other comparable length of time. You can have bi-annually, bi-monthly, etc. Why would you change one measure of time away from the established system just because there happens to be another word that means two weeks?

You elected Bush twice.

I mean, I know YOU didn't, but your country elected Bush twice. He became a running gag, and then he got dangerous with the whole Iraq thing which just pissed people off. We began to hate Blair even more after he was perceived to be Bush's lapdog, that's how bad the anti-Bush sentiment is.

Even the people who agreed with the war didn't like Blair becoming a stooge to this man who was perceived as being both terrible and stupid. It just looked flatout bad for a country that is so pro-democracy to vote in this guy. Like, "is this the result of America's "land of the free" thing? They elect someone mentally ****tarded?" (Not my opinion, just paraphrasing perception) He single-handedly developed a stereotype of America that it will take a hell of a long time for you guys to shake off.

Then there's the whole "biggest army, huge country, most money" thing and the perception that you are an incredibly self-important country. You are also thought to be very ignorant about the outside world. Like I was watching HIMYM the other day and they said Barney was pretending to be British, and also Scottish (that being an example of the common misconception that Britain = England). That's the kind of thing that pisses people off - your country is so huge and contains so many different cultures it's like you don't have time for anyone else.

I don't really believe these things because I know Americans, mostly from this board, and know that you are not all that ignorant. But Americans, particularly the ones from the bible belt, get an incredible amount of vitriol. And to be honest a lot of it is justified, but then it's not like we're perfect either. And the rest of Europe sure as hell isn't (lol Greece for going bankrupt, lol France in general).

Electing Bush twice though? That has set your standing with the rest of the world wayyyy, way back. I don't think America was this hated even when Clinton's administration descended into what was essentially tabloid gossip.

I don't want to keep throwing disclaimers in here, but again, I don't believe most of this, but a lot of American stereotypes are at least justifiable.

No, the problem is that there are plenty of stupid people in world. America is in the spotlight because that's where we've ended up. So stupidity is more easy to spot when we have such a large focus on media that spans to everywhere.

I didn't nominate Bush (I know, you said you didn't say I did), but I didn't vote, period. Did you see the other option the second time?

Oh and on the point of Americans being ignorant, you're right. This country is definitely too big. We have so much going on here, and we're so far apart from everyone, that many people are just uninformed. North America made up of 3 countries (the others don't count) whereas in Europe you're surrounded by everyone.
