Careful, SMuffin: if you flip that switch, the socialists might get wind of it and demand that you replace all your lights with CFL bulbs.

The switch is on the opposite end of the kitchen near the door to the laundry room. It operates the kitchen lights, and is a duplicate of the switch on the side of the kitchen near the living room which I have always been using to operate said lights.

If by "socialists" you mean "George W Bush" and by "might" you mean "already signed a law requiring" then you would be correct.

Light switches that dont do anything (that you can see) are the worst

Although once at a friend's house when his N64 wasn't turning on we figured out a light switch controlled whether the socket worked or not

I have a light switch that controls an outlet in my house. We plugged a lamp into it.

I've had a few of those in other places I've lived. Not here though. Really annoying when you forget about it and are in the middle of a video game and haven't saved in awhile.

Do you often randomly flick Light Switches while you're in the middle of playing a video game?

There are like ten of those in my house. Like every faceplate has two or three switches, and often times at least one does nothing. Some we've learned go to power outlets, which is also annoying. Others we think are in case we want to put ceiling fans in every goddamn room, since the ones we have put in have switches that control both the fan and the lights. But there are still like at least ten that just don't make sense.

I've got a ton of those in my apartment. They're all in rooms that don't have light fixtures installed, and the idea seems to be that you hook floor lamps up to them. At least that's what I do. It's kinda annoying though because sometimes the socket is in a place that I want to use it, but I really don't want to plug anything but lamps in there.

I do, actually. I know they aren't supposed to be capitalized but for some reason my fingers can't help but fly to the Shift Key.

Speaking of the annoying light switches in my house, I just discovered there are two switches in this room that control the same plug in. Why. There also doesn't seem to be a single switch anywhere near this room that controls the overhead light. Why.

Nope, no mandate yet. Try going to Home Depot and purchasing incandescent bulbs; they won't stop you.

Well no, of course not, that would be direct and obvious and cause public outrage. Congress would never do that, they're much smarter. So instead, they pass a law that simply mandates energy efficiency standards for light bulbs, similar to the fuel efficiency standards for cars. Well, who isn't in favor of greater efficiency? Did they attach that one to the flags for orphans bill?

Anyway, what they don't tell you is that the new "efficiency standards" are such that incandescent bulbs will never be able to meet them. So no, you are not forbidden from purchasing them, but companies are forbidden from manufacturing or selling them within the United States. I suppose it would not be illegal of you to import them from China via ebay or something. Also, like most terrible things Congress does, they wouldn't just pass it and make it effective immediately, oh no! It was passed in something like 2007 to become effective in like 2013 (not entirely sure on the exact dates). Why, isn't that convenient?! By the time we actually face the consequences, the guy who signed the bill into law and a large amount of the people who wrote the law will already be out of office and unable to face the public resentment! Neato!

For the record, tea party members tried to repeal this a few weeks ago and didn't have enough votes... in the house.

I hate when they do stuff like that. Just let the bill do what it is supposed to. If you want to do something else than make that a different bill.

There are three switches in the house that I never noticed for at least five years. One's high up in the bathroom and turns the tub on and off and my mind was blown when I first saw it when I was like twelve. One's a switch in my parent's room that's a standard turning things on and off that just blends in well. Then there's the emergency boiler on-off switch that's painted bright red on the blue (or formerly poorly wallpapered) dining room that I always forget even exists.

Though none of those are as bad as when I spent ten years completely forgetting there was a basketball hoop in our driveway (and if I ever saw it, I'd ask, "When'd we get a basketball hoop?" and then proceed to forget it existed immediately afterwards), and then another mind**** when I learned it had a streetlight at the top. Too bad there isn't a switch for it.

Or is there?

At my parents' house we had a duplicate light switch on the stairs, one at the top and one at the bottom. So there's not NO reason because that's a good one.

There are actually five switches in my house that control the main hallway lights. One when you're coming in from the front door, one by the stairs (which is near the laundry room/garage and the family room), and upstairs there's one outside the master bedroom and two more by two other bedrooms.
