I hope this is a good thing in the long run. He's a great director and the pilot shone like it did because of that but I don't think he's cut out for showrunning. Perhaps keep him on as a consultant/occasional director.
Although I don't want it to, I think it might be interesting to see the show fall even more. I mean, with this and Game of Thrones they're adapting two of my favorite works of fiction to screen. To see one fail miserably while the other just soars would be an interesting juxtaposition.
