maybe it's just Civ 4 becoming an even more distant memory in my mind, but Civ 5 is really looking better and better.

I tried to play Civ 5 for the first time last night. I've never played any Civ game. I absolutely hated it. I just can't play this type of game.

It's still not as good as Civ 4 today, but it's improved dramatically since it was released, yeah. There are still AI issues and diplomacy doesn't work like it should, but hopefully they do an actual expansion instead of just patching, so they can make more significant changes to the core of the game.

Civ 5 is the first civ game I ever played.

I proceeded to play it for 11 hours straight unknowingly that day.

I don't think you're the only one. I never played Alpha Centauri but Alpha Centaur 2 would make me pretty excited

One problem I still have with the game is that there's too much open space

but then I added 2 extra players to the largest map size and everyone hates each other >_>

I will not be completely satisfied with Civ V until it has an end game world timeline thingy and graphs. As it stands, I am just mostly satisfied. They have indeed been improving the game, and combat is now somewhat tactical without annoying stacks of doom. Still has flaws, but at least it can be called a game now instead of the crash-a-thon memory leaky mess it was at launch.

I bought it Friday. I've only played it a couple times, but it's been fun. The last game I played was a little lame because I was on a giant island by myself, while there were two other islands with everyone else, so I was able to win because I just got to build up and not compete with anyone.

I played a lot of III before IV. IV was an improvement in every way. V compared to IV is a mixed bag. I really do hope they release an expansion for V sometime, IV really took big leaps forward with its expansions.

I'll say it again: the only real problems with Civ 5 from the start have been...

1) Research Agreements. OP. That simple.
2) The AI cannot play tactically.
3) Bugs.
4) Diplo victory is stupid imba.

3 has been addressed. 4 can be turned off, fortunately. 1 tried to be addressed but was not enough. (the easy solution is to scale the cost based on how many active ones you have)

Unfortunately, 2 is an open research question as far as I know, so it might be a while before Civ 5 is good in my books.

II>IV>>>III

All great games though II>IV is probably just nostalgia. Haven't played V yet my computer would literally go up in flames since my fan is broken. It looked awesome I'm glad to hear that the patches are solving some of the problems that the base game had. The changes they made sounded good in theory.

IV is still loads better, but civ 5 is improving. They need a full on expansion to truly revamp things. Diplomacy is just so ****ing bad in civ 5, and i wish they kept religions and corporations. Gave more things to shoot towards in the tech tree.

I like the civics system in civ 5, although civ 4's civics arent bad.

City states need to be added upon significantly too.

And alpha centauri was indeed amazing.

Cultural victory isn't that difficult. It's really easy to run a fast producing, high economy civ with only a couple of cities.

how so? Added depth to the game to make things interesting? Added to diplomacy and potential income? Those were GREAT additions to add depth to the civ series.

You need to have at absolute most 3 cities for cultural victory. A good tip to remember is that puppets will also provide you with culture without increasing the cost of policies.

Religion was a nice idea that wasn't so great in execution. For the most part, each religion acted the exact same as all the others -- it only mattered that you founded one, and that you spread it around so that you could remain on good terms with everyone else. It had too much of an effect on diplomacy, especially with certain people Isabella the worst. It wouldn't work in Civ V, and it needed plenty of work in its Civ IV state, so I don't miss that too much. If they took the time to actually fix it, and make it more interesting, then I'd be all for them working it back in. Corporations kinda had their own issues, but I actually liked them, and I do kind of miss that aspect of the late game. Something about the way economy functions in Civ V rubs me the wrong way in general.
