When I was a kid i thought some of the episodes were scary too. Most of the things they deal with involve murders with unusual circumstances. It's instinct to fear the unknown.

And yeah it was worth it. I watched the show pretty regularly when it first came out back in 93 but i stopped right when they really started getting into the whole alien conspiracy stuff. So it was worth it too see how they decided to play that out on top of being genuinely intrigued and entertained by the explanations they were able to come up with for the different x files.

*spoilers for one episode*
It was definitely scary at times. I distinctly recall one episode where I think Mulder's car brakes down in the middle of nowhere with no gas and he has to go to the only village around. He goes to people's doors but no one opens or answers despite there clearly being people living there, in a Kafkaesque nightmarish way. The only person who answers had no phone, in fact no one in the village had any way to communicate with the outside. So he's basically stuck there. And the village, they happen to be a religious cult who sacrifices virgins and outsiders (or something like that). To me, that was more scary than all the ghosts and aliens the show throws at you! That was just way too much for me as a kid.

The opening was still the scariest and what drove a lot of people away from the start though

(spoilers)

I could be wrong but I believe it's Scully that breaks down and village/cult are worshipping this wierd slug like creature that burrows into peoples backs and attaches itself to their spine eventually killing them. The creature turned out to have some kind of mind control over the people of the village.

That was actually very late in the show during a time Mulder had went missing for several episodes and Scully working with agent Doggett who was played by the guy that played the t-1000 in terminator 2.(can't remember his real name)

Oh okay sorry, it's been a few years since I've watched it

But really, the segment where she goes around knocking on doors and no one answering (and you even see the people in the living room completely ignoring it) just freaked me out at the time and it's still burrowed in my mind (albeit not very accurately apparently!)

Yep. Early and often. But there's unfortunately a rather large contingent with unlimited resources working against Mulder to discredit his every finding.

That was one of the creepier episodes IMO. At one point after tricking her into loaning one of them her gun, they surround her, hold her down and let the slug creature burrow into her back.

about halfway through the series they introduce an alien virus that controls the minds of the effected and eventually turns them into aliens. And then even later in the Series they introduce an alien human/hybrid that's referred to as a super soldier.

Go into the future and confirm or deny for me if we're going to get a proper finale to the 2012 arc in time for December 2012.

You know I was hoping the 2nd movie would continue on the 2012 story arc and wrap things up a little better. I should have known better. It wasn't an awful movie, but if they ever do another one i'd much rather them build off the show rather than make basically a 2 hour episode about an x file that's completely unrelated to anything that happened in the show.

The black oil stuff was the alien virus that took control of people and eventually turned them into super soldiers. That's how Interpreted it. The reason it took on the form of oil is because it was actually dormant for thousands of years and was only able to survive in underground petroleum fields. They explain all of that In season 8 I think and then again in the very last episode. The alien conspiracy plot is a bit tough to follow at times because it took so many plot turns. They give you one reason and then 2 seasons later they come up with a new explanation. So just when you think you've got a good handle on what's going the writers change it up on you.

The incest episode reminded me of "The Hills Have Eyes". Didn't like what happened to the sherriff but that was still a really good episode. They could have come back and done another episode on that family but I'm glad they didn't. Since they did just about everything they could to keep to themselves it makes sense that they weren't likely to resurface quickly.

Sweet! It took me over a year to get through it all, there is no better show to watch late at night before going to bed.

What did you think of Doggett and Reyes?

I think out of the 4 Doggett ended up being my favorite. Reyes just seemed too one dimensional. I don't know, she was just too flighty or something. Reminded me of a palm reader or something.

"I Want To Believe" was meant to test the waters with something easier for the mainstream consumer to get into before gearing up toward more mytharc-related matters in follow-ups. Chris Carter has claimed that IWTB did well enough to justify a continuation but the clock is ticking if he wants to time it right.

This series definitely deserves another movie to wrap things up properly.

Even if it means they have to skimp a little on the budget!

After 202 episodes and two movies it really doesn't sit right with me for them to leave us hanging like that. I seriously hope a follow-up eventually hits.

The X-Files is a big part of pop culture though. I think it will happen... eventually.

That's only half right. The oil did take control of people and made them stronger but it wasn't what turned them into super soldiers. It was actually the alien virus that was meant infect and repopulate the Earth millions of years ago. Then the Ice Age happened and it threatened to wipe out the virus so it lay dormant in petroleum deposits and evolved. Sometime around Roswell is when the aliens first came back and deal was brokered between them and the Syndicate in it's earliest forms to use the virus infested oil to infect the Earth once again. The virus had to be mined and manufactured for the oil and then distributed to the public. If you remember the bees this is how they meant to do it. Genetically altered bees that would spread it with their sting. Most of this is dealt with in the first movie and later, the sixth season. There's one episode in S6 that basically wraps up the alien invasion plot and would have been a good end for the series. After that it just gets convoluted, way more than it already was.

Also, what happened to Mulder's sister is never revealed. That episode (Paper Hearts) gives a little insight into what may have happened to her but it's whole point is to get Mulder to the point where he feels comfortable not ever truly knowing what happened to her. A lot of fans dislike that episode.
