For all previous gens you could just buy cartridges or discs. Old PC games you can download through GOG and such. But unless everything gets carried over, how will you be able to play downloadable console games next gen or the gen after?

Well, I hope so. I'd say it's guaranteed next gen but iffy for the following one. Who knows what will happen by then?

if nintendo can have your games carry over from the DSi to the 3DS I'm sure it'll be no problem with the 3 consoles

it's kind of like how most systems aren't backwards compatible through every gen, you'll just have to own your 360/PS3/whatever and not sell it. But, as long as PSN and XBL allow you to keep the same account through each gen, I imagine it won't be a problem.

If they really do wait a few more years for the next generation Microsoft and Sony consoles, there may not even BE a generation after that for those companies.

If the 360 and PS3 can last 10 years, then I think the 720 and PS4 (or whatever) might be capable of maxing things out for a long long time.
