So jokes aside, how big of an impact would the extinction of the whales cause, anyway?

So jokes aside, how big of an impact would the extinction of the whales cause, anyway? Apart from an upset of the food chain across varying oceans nothing huge, although someone with more knowledge on the aspect could come in and call me on that one. Me, I'm a big fan of keeping as many species alive as possible and all that. I'd probably be willing to sacrifice a few hundred humans in the name of a beautiful and unique species; blue whales are the largest species on Earth, after all! -- Sir Chris Police ~Ace Detective in Homicide~ http://img.imgcake.com/Jeffzeropngus.png "Thanks Punny!" ... I don't know the exact ecosystem but if you look at the history of the earth I have to say one species going extinct isn't a big deal in the long run. Life on this planet has survived some ridiculously brutal trauma where 75% of all species' of those times were wiped out, the ocean can surely handle blue whales disappearing. Yeah, like I said, I don't think it'd be a major ordeal. Especially since they're not even the only whales out there by a long shot.

Blue Whales disappearing wouldn't really change much since they're at the top of the foodchain thanks to their massive size so they're not hunted by a lot of things besides humans. The only thing that'd happen is a higher population of krill.
Now if Krills or Planktons were to disappear that'd hurt much much more. -- Best LPer ever, Gix ! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt5YKmP7ecY ... Copied to Clipboard!

Don't forget the Permian-Triassic extinction event. It has been argued that a major catastrophic event took place at that time.

Some of the monsters that existed during that era are more impressive to me than the dinosaurs, it was almost like an alien planet. It makes me wonder what earth will be like hundreds of millions of years from now after our time has passed.
