He never even remembered his parents' death growing up; he willingly accepted the Dursleys' explanation of how they died.

Inconsistency maybe, but at least there's an out.

How about all those people that had seen no death and then walked straight into the front of the Horseless Carriage?

Did they crash into an invisible horsey or did they walk right through it because it doesn't exist to them?

He never saw his mom die. He was in the crib at the time.

He also never saw actually Quirrel die except in the movies. That's their own plothole to deal with.

J.K. Rowling wrote it really early in the process. Apparently she really wanted to use it, but it would've been so much better if she had just rewritten it entirely while writing Deathly Hallows.

I'd argue against this. The universe may not be very well-constructed, especially since humor often takes priority over logic when it comes to explaining why things are the way they are, but I think the actual stories themselves are fine.

and if she did magic while she was young enough to still use teacups, it didn't count because at that age they can't control it.

same reason Harry didn't get in trouble for turning his teachers hair blue, sending snakes free, etc.

Harry Potter is VERY well written. At points it sacrifices a tad bit of logic to let the childish imagination wander, but the story never wavers or suffers because of it.

The biggest plothole is the use of Time Turners for ONE book, then copping out by apparently "destroying them all" in Book Five. Of course using time travel is always a slippery slope so I'm not really surprised that Rowling didn't touch on it again after PoA.

Hmm... I'm skeptical about the idea that it was "nothing too serious" - IIRC, in Prisoner of Azkaban they make a very big deal about using magic illegally in the Muggle world. I like the alternative explanations better! Though, yeah, you could also go with "that's not how it happened because Petunia was exaggerating."

The first question is also answered in more detail.

http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/faq_view.cfm?id=21

While I always thought the whole "Harry had to understand Cedric's death" thing was a copout, from the way she explains it, it was mainly added as a way to avoid confusing readers with something random at the end of the book that wouldn't be answered until later. That kind of justifies it a little.

Time Turners were a slippery slope but it was explained in the book as

"You can't go back and change anything, just do more of what you already did."

Basically, it was giving Hermoine something to do while Harry was off growing his legend. This was the point of the series where Rowling didn't really know the path for Hermoine and it shows. We had the whole "Hermoine is a Genius and Over Achiever" thing, so Rowling just ran with it and used it to eventually tie into Harry's story.

Thankfully, starting with Book 4, Rowling stuck Hermoine with Ron while Harry was off being a BOSS.

Well plothole might not be an accurate description. But thinking of all the other times within the books that a Time Turner would have been useful, and you'd think that someone SOMEWHERE would be able to get their hands on one and try to prevent something from happening.

Hermoine was already signed up for those classes, all she did was miss them. So she went back in time and didn't miss them and missed the other ones.

At no point in time was she ever in BOTH classes, always one or the other.

The problem with this logic (and it's a problem all time travel plots need to deal with if they go for the single timeline thing) is that if you can't go back and change anything because you already did it, you have to have done it in the first place. The act of going back in time to change things has to originate from somewhere

Time Travel paradoxes whoo. She was always in both places at once and she never missed any lessons, because if she did, she couldn't have gone back in time and been in it, because that would have caused a paradox. It's a closed loop with no start, which is, of course, a paradox.

This is why discussing TT is so difficult and why it's best not to use it.

Hermoine techinically WAS in both classes, but she couldn't go back and take more or different classes that she hadn't already been apart of if that makes sense.

As the book explained it, the Time Turners can't change things that had already happened. So Dumbledore couldn't use it to erase Voldemort for instance.

She's hanging in the common room at 7.59 and is chatting with Harry. A minute later Hermione appears out of nowhere in the Room of Requirement. She hasn't touched a TT yet, so how the **** did the 2nd Hermione show up?

It only turned back exactly an hour. She needed to finish one class, find an empty location and turn back time one hour and then run to her class. Assuming classes are an hour long, she's consistently going to be late for half her classes.
