I don't like them. What are they implying? Whose job is it to tell these people stuff? Why weren't they there when people told other people the same stuff? Isn't it basically acknowledging that they already know everyone else knows what they're posting?
I can't blame the people who make these topics, because it's obvious why they exist. They're direct counters to jerks who post "old" whenever someone posts something out of date. But in the end it just ends up being an annoying roundabout way to end up with the exact same problem. People shouldn't be ashamed about posting something old, unless it's really old, already been posted on the board, or they make a big deal about it. I'd rather people just post things normally and accept it, and not act like adding the words "why didn't anyone tell me" somehow makes them untouchable.
With the way the Internet works, everything you can post has a good chance of being old. Unless you're posting something you made yourself. Even news posted the same day it was made can be old, so if you want to post anything you're just going to have to accept this. The only way to stop the "old" problem and the "why didn't anyone tell me" problem is to communally agree on some simple rules:
- The person who posts "Old" is infinitely worse than the person who posted something that's old.
It's not helpful or notable in any way, it's just annoying. The person who started the topic couldn't possibly feel any dumber than the jackass who posted "old". It proves that some people have seen the news before. Who gives a crap? It seems like most of time when someone posts an "old" topic, there are still a good amount of people who haven't seen it before, so the topic is still worth posting, and the topic creator hasn't done anything to criticize.
- The acceptable times when someone who posts something old should feel bad is:
1) When something is years old.
2) When the topic creator makes a big deal about for some annoying reason ("Look what I just found!" "You HAVE to watch this, it's so funny! XDXD" etc.)
3) When another topic about the same thing is already on the board. (See below)
- It's okay to post something that already has a topic about it if the first topic had a stupid title.
You see this happen often. Someone posts some news (like say, a Zelda remake), but instead of posting some information in the topic title, they'll create a topic like "I'm so happy right now" or "Oh my god, yes, they're finally doing it". When someone else wants to post the news and decides to search and see if anyone's done it before, none of the obvious search terms ("Zelda", "Remake", "Nintendo", "Loz" etc.) will bring the first topic up and they'll post their own topic. In this case, they can't be blamed.
My wish is to stop the scourge of "old" posts and "why didn't anyone tell me" topics in my lifetime. We can end it, but we need to move past this bizarre, inherit shame that comes from posting something that's old. If you want to post something, just post it and don't worry about whether people will say if it's old. If you see a topic about something that you've seen before, just move on or add a post more noteworthy than simply calling it old. It's just that simple.
