And this idea of "subtlely influencing the outcome although perhaps not overtly" is the one area where you could really argue Vaan being a main character of FFXII because he ends up having a pretty decent influence on Ashe.

Yuna would have been kidnapped by the Al Bhed and nobody would no where to rescue her. Can't get much more tangible than that.

The Al Bhed had already told the Aurochs they kidnapped her.

I meant when Rikku kidnaps her. What, is Wakka going to defeat that machina by himself?

Well, you also run the risk of Yuna getting kidnapped on the Shoopuf and Wakka not being able to rescue her on his own, which obviously changes a lot.

Ah, ok. I'll give you that one, even though it isn't clearcut Wakka couldn't have taken care of that. And who knows what Rikku would have done following that. But still, this is a strong possibility that he changes things here.

And to be clear, I'm not arguing that he doesn't affect the outcome in the end with Yuna's decision, and that his presence and influence on others was not important throughout the story for that culmination of events. And the story itself changes drastically in presentation without an "outsider" POV. But the current ongoing events for much of the story largely play out the same way. That is the only point I am making, and why people often reach the conclusion he is not the main character.

I've never played FFXII, but I would say that the main character is the person from whose perspective the story is told, even if they are not the most important one.

Kate Winslet's character is the most important one in The Reader for example, but Ralph Fiennes's character is the main character, because the story is told from his perspective. As long as the game is "told" from Vaan's perspective I would consider him the main character.

But do you think Lulu, Wakka, or Kimahri do anything?

Tidus, Auron, and Rikku were all about it.

I'm pretty sure Auron had that situation well in hand. And even without him as well, the only person who might not fight Seymour would be Wakka. Kimahri literally ran ahead of everyone else, and I don't think Lulu wouldn't have prioritized Yuna's protection.

The game isn't told from Vaan's perspective, did I miss something? If anything it's told from Penelo's perspective. She narrates the events sometimes, same way Vanille does. Would you say Vanille is the FFXIII main character?

I honestly don't see the need to find a main character for these games. There obviously isn't a clearly defined one, and the game is better because of it. It means (almost) all the characters play a big part in the story!

Except in FFXII none of the characters do this :)

They really half-ass any sort of specific character perspective from Vaan for much of the story, despite that clearly being the approach to the story at the beginning.

You could make that argument too. There is definitely some sort peasant's take on the events of nobility for much of the early perspective that seems to just stop around the time you get Basch.

There are many reasons why they all play a big role (except maybe Penelo) but I would have to fill topic with spoilers. FFXII is great though.

Oh man, I was actually re-playing through FFXII recently since I have actually never made it into Archades, and I was just thinking how Vaan really has no major impact on the story at all. The biggest part I can think of right now is getting Penelo to be captured by those head hunters, which eventually leads Larsa to give her the manufactured Nethercite.

To go back to the original question, I feel like Samus in Other M is a decent candidate, at least looking at the big picture of the game's plot.
SPOILERS

I mean the end result is that the entire GF team besides Anthony dies, the frozen metroid lab is destroyed, but the GF recovers the rest of their research, and then the entire thing is blown up. There's not really any reason to think that any of that would have been different at all if Samus hadn't shown up.
