I was intent on avoiding this topic, because I haven't followed it enough to justify talking about it. However, a situation yesterday acted as a catalyst. This acts as my own fault, but it also provides a takeoff point for the Wii's current policy.

I bought the Wii simply to expand my options for Gamefly. Aside from Nintendo's first party remake fest (Super Paper Mario, DKCR, Punch-Out), there wasn't much to intrigue me. I got Secret of Mana out of the Virtual Console. To think a 20 year old game would be more enjoyable seems awkward. I felt justified in avoiding the Motion Plus peripheral. However, Red Steel 2 was sent to me by Gamefly. I quickly realized I actually needed Motion Plus to play it. I'd need it for more games too, but what's the point, when the system has a lackluster lineup?

This brings me to Rainfall. This was a chance for Nintendo of America to prove that my purchase wasn't utterly useless. Denying America games that are complete (and translated for Europe) shows us NoA's intention to kick hardcore gamers in the balls. Maybe it's the casual gaming rush, the games are niche, or they are holding them out for the Wii U. However, actions like this only add to the irritation I've felt after wasting $250 on a console. What's to stop them from screwing us over later on?

Wii U strikes me as little more than a PS3/360 that can play Mario. Even if they hold out Rainfall's lineup, that's not enough to make me forget how weak the Wii has really been.

At least DQX is on the horizon...

the U is an interesting case

iwata and reggie want us to believe that they're putting more emphasis on "core gamers" now

but won't release an already completed game here when otherwise we'd have the wii ending with TWO YEARS of nothing good but skyward sword?

given EA's presence at the conference it seems they really meant fratcore, they just want to get in the pockets of the people buying madden and FPS' once a year. nice double speak nintendo

I refuse to buy another Nintendo product again that isn't on a system I already own. Nintendo has made it plenty clear that they don't care one bit about the core gamer. They give these speeches full of lies and false hope just so people that have been fans since the good days will keep being fans, while acting entirely differently. There will be 0 reason whatsoever to purchase the Wii-U, unless all you're looking for are more big-name first party games and ports from the 360/PS3. I hope both Microsoft and Sony make it much closer this next gen. and I hope Nintendo falls absolutely flat on their face. Judging by how hyped people get for poor remakes of old N64 games though, that's probably unlikely. It's like people want to keep defending Nintendo instead of criticizing them. You critique a product and give feedback about ways to improve it. People don't do this with Nintendo. They simply defend everything they do.

the U might actually have good third party titles...at first. the question is whether or not nintendo's fanbase, which typically doesn't buy third party games much, will actually make it worth their while and keep them there. still no hard drive is also kind of shooting themselves in the foot

Y'know, Nintendo aren't going to want to deliberately cut out an audience, especially when they're putting more of a focus on hardcore players with the Wii U. This isn't some evil, moustache twirling plot to screw over core gamers deliberately.

The reason NoA aren't releasing the game is because they think there's not enough interest. They are, of course, wrong. However, it's important to understand that NoA aren't bad people, they're just thick.

Dude, you don't need to do anything more than look at the awful controller design. Expect third party games that already exist and new ones similar to Deadspace Extraction and Umbrella Chronicles.

I also think it's massively counterintuitive to say "Nintendo said this, third party developers said this, so clearly the opposite is true".

Has Nintendo ever actually said they want to 'win' the core audience? That's not an audience Nintendo has ever pandered to, and I'm not sure that anything about the Wii U screams 'hardcore.' Have you heard Reggie talk about checking boxes? That stuff is painful. 1080p? Check that box. I don't think that's going to go over well for them, if that's what they're really trying to do.
