...the only games I've played through to completion from that timeframe are Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Yoshi's Island. And I haven't gotten 100% in any of them, and with the exception of FF6 and CT, it's been a good while since I played through any of them.
So if I were to do a "SNES era marathon", what should I play through? I felt like asking just for the heck of it.
Okay, so based off the responses so far such a "marathon" would look like this:
Contra III: The Alien Wars Donkey Kong Country Mega Man X Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest Kirby Super Star (via DS version) Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
But feel free to keep the responses coming! I just felt like posting my reaction here.
From: LinkMarioSamus | #005 Sorry I'm not emulating using my computer. Whatever I get will be entirely off of the virtual console or retail rereleases.
I said "SNES era", which means Genesis too!
'well then'
Shining Force Shining Force II Breath of Fire II Super Mario RPG Uncharted Waters: New Horizons Kirby's Dream Land 3 Kirby Super Star
First 2 are for the Genesis and all of these can be found on the Wii VC.

So KSS and Contra III are the only games to be mentioned more than once so far.
Embarrassing Confession: I started a playthrough of Super Mario RPG back in '09 and never finished the game. It's not like I disliked it or anything...
EDIT: I've played F-Zero too! For whatever reason I couldn't survive on Fire Field though...
OK, I can appreciate your poo-pooing Axelay and Darius Twin, but Cybernator kicked ass and you're wrong to ignore it. Things blow way the hell up in that game, and you're missing out.
SubDeity posted... Sig says it all. Best SNES game except maybe LTTP and Super Metroid. It's Japan-only but I can guide you to a translation patch if you need help.
I already mentioned that I'm not going to use a software emulator aside from the virtual console.
I suppose if I don't get ninja'd here (which is likely), I'd just like to put it out there that any early 90s era marathons are rarely complete without Sonic.
And it seems that Shining Force I and II were also mentioned twice each. I suppose I use this post to mention that I've never beaten a game in many of these franchises (Donkey Kong, Mario RPG, Kirby, Contra, Mega Man, etc.).
I decided that the length of the "marathon" should be about 10 games if I ever get around to doing it. So here's what I'd pick as of now:
Super Castlevania IV Contra III: The Alien Wars Shining Force Mega Man X Shining Force II Donkey Kong Country Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble Kirby Super Star (Ultra)
