Especially teenage girls. The Popular Thing with teenage girls is almost always THE butt of jokes in greater culture, and other things that are percieved as "female interests" are denigrated on that and that alone. Women need a fucking break.

Men aren't readily allowed to break free of stereotypes.

If a man likes romantic movies, ballet, or anything even remotely "girly" he is made fun of.

When a woman likes football, MMA, or anything remotely "masculine" she is generally seen as cool.

Both men and women face dumb restrictions that are thankfully breaking down.

Decently enough but Twilight was maligned heavily. I think it sucks and is silly nonsense but it didn't deserve the amount of hatred people at the time poured at it and it's target demographic

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

People are being overly dramatic here.

All three of those things blew up in popularity. Twilight blew up so much, there was a like a whole fad popped up of movies and shows being about vampires and or werewolves. Bieber hasn't gone anywhere, and in fact blew up more.

Just like anything popular, they tend to end up the butt of many jokes. This isn't a woman thing, it's a "popular things are low hanging fruit to attack" thing.

That's part of it, for sure, but in this particular case I'd say it's more because of the fragility of masculinity. A lot of immature men are deathly afraid that liking anything that's popular with girls will make them look unmanly or gay.

The thing with stuff like Twilight is that the lesson shouldn't really be 'girls have bad taste'

The lesson should be that this was a demographic that isn't being served by much else on that level and Twilight was there to take advantage of a space that didn't have much competition. You had a whole bunch of girls hungry for more supernatural stuff after the popularity of Harry Potter so it's not a surprise the vampire love story from the perspective of a normal girl made bank in retrospect.

Overall it's still something that is prime to be taken advantage of too. Barbie managed to hit both the nostalgia beats, be a good movie and have something to say and it paid off incredibly well. Taylor Swift shows that if you specifically focus on giving this audience the content that they want that they will be just as loyal and obsessed as nerd fandoms are. Both of these things payoff extra because even though women are the focus it is still good and the appeal is also broad in addition. Just like what happens with stuff with guys as the primary demo.

When the women are given these opportunities to write stuff that appeals to them (and no I don't mean assigning them to make a superhero movie in a larger universe) it's not a surprise that it pays off like other stuff does.

They may get made fun of in the early teenage years but as they grow into adults they are the ultimate trend setters.

When I was in middle school / early high school they were the only ones using text messaging and got made fun of it all the time in mass culture. Now it is like the only form of communication. They were made fun of for selfies and that became one of the most popular things. Made fun of posting pictures of themselves on instagram then that became the norm. Then there was tiktok which has completely taken over social media now.

There are so many more examples of things like this where they were the first to adopt something seemingly silly and got made fun of for it then years later everyone was doing it.

I feel like a lot of stuff in here isn't hated, isn't for teenage girls, or both. 50 Shades was obviously not targeted at teenage girls. Taylor Swift has been around so long I don't know how she could possibly be for teenage girls alone, she's also one of the most popular acts ever. I remember everyone liking her when I was in grad school.

2003 Cat in the Hat Movie and Michael Bay Transformers isn't any better.

Both the single film and 5 part film series is basically porno parodies (minus porn) that was deemed acceptable of representing their respective source material.

And like it as I might the 1984 Transformers show isn't all that different from the corresponding My Little Pony show either.

Anyway, maybe it's just my lack of concern over masculinity, but I just find it interesting that Transformers, G.I.Joe or such was really good in the 80s, but aside from the first 65 episodes of The Real Ghostbusters and then some (due to studio interference)?

The legit good stuff tended to be while gender neutral DuckTales, The Raccoons and I am very serious, The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin.

No. Though might as well be as it has the trappings of what boys stereotypically like.

Still can just replace that with Bay's TMNT films. And BvS (Man of Steel too).

I think it is more that what is popular mainstream for guys is curated both by the girls and the boys.
Any guy straying from that will be hit by labels like nerd, weirdo, etc from both sexes.

You will find most teenage cis guys have a vapid personality designed to maximize women liking them based on what they believe is curated. Those who don't are usually not successful (talking teenagers).

The thing about this is that while some of this is certainly true, most of this is STILL decided by guys. For example, stereotypical things like big dicks and shredded physiques, while obviously still valued by women, are actually valued more by MEN than women. You'll see more calling other people's dicks tiny or boasting about their own big dicks and calling themselves chads from guys than gals.

On the other hand, things like being romantic, being affectionate, being good with kids, that women also value a lot, are something men are much more likely to scoff or squirm at. A good example with teenagers: boy band pretty boys are obviously EXTREMELY popular among teenage girls, but they're far less popular among teenage boys, with far less boys wanting to emulate them. In fact, these kinds of dudes are considered cringe and "gay" by teenage boys.

ftr I do see this changing more and more in modern days though.

I thought Twilight's main demographic was middle-age women rather than teenagers? I haven't looked at any statistics though, so I could be wrong.

And criticism of Twilight, at least by people who are doing it thoughtfully, is centered around the unfortunate subtext. Bella is entitled and manipulative, while Edward and Jacob have poor impulse control, violent tendencies, and in the former's case his stalking is portrayed as "flattering." Like it's ideal boyfriend behaviour. Let's not even get into the whole imprinting thing either.

Women need more entertainment options aimed at them - and they should be demanding better than most of what they're getting. Hell, that was MLP Friendship is Magic's entire mission statement.

I'd confidently bet money (not much, a tenner at most) that while there are no doubt plenty of fans who have that fantasy, the majority do not and instead just don't quite understand the ramifications of what it is they're fangirling over.

It's like when anime fans make the tsundere girl their waifu, even though in reality they'd make for horrible partners because verbal (and often physical) abuse is not healthy.
