You get nice stamina regen from that one shield.

Shields are great. Just hold it up and wait for enemies to attack and bounce off it and gives you free hits.

Never used them much myself - except against ranged attacks - but no problem with people who like to "sword and board".

my first build in dark souls 1 was str with greatshield of artorias and black knight sword. could block just about everything without taking much stamina, and then mop up duty with the sword. no need to roll around constantly like an idiot.

I like shields because they're more stamina efficient and I don't need to ever bother with the awful feeling clunky rolling mechanics

DS1 and 2 having some of the most clunky roll mechanics out of all ARPGs has nothing to do with skill, and I don't suffer from some sort of complex that makes me feel the need to prove I'm "superior" by refusing to use the most efficient tools to complete the games

Rolling try-hards are the ones with skill issues

Its way more boring but at the end of the day its up to others how they use the tools given by the game.

It's easier with a shield, I don't play these games for the git gud difficulty

Are they offered in game as a standard item with a standard control implementation? Yes, ok then, perfectly acceptable to use in game. The people who gatekeep about stuff like this are the definition of trolls.

souls fans - you don't need a difficulty mode because it's inherently built into the game with things like spells, summoning, spirit ashes, and shields. but we'll make fun of you if you use any build besides a naked 2 handing melee build.

throne duo was my favorite fight in 2 and I won that by sometimes switching to two-handing shield.

I like the big Artorias Shield.
I like how Bed of Chaos hits you and you slide back and then continue walking forward.
And I like the backwards air roll animation it does when Kalameet headbutts it. Weirdly satisfying.

I always feel like Bloodborne and onwards is effectively hard coded to destroy you if your only defense is a shield. Combined with dodging though, it's fantastic.

I don't use shields in them anymore, but I'm not gonna begrudge someone less skilled using a shield to also be able to enjoy one of my favourite franchises. Let people play how they want.

There was a guy who was doing a Caestus run on one of the DkS 3 boards. He stopped posting (or I stopped follwing the thread) eventually, so not sure how far he got. Seemed doable, if quite difficult.

Pfft dodging. Just dress up in the heaviest armor in the whole game with some def spells and let them waste their pitiful lives. That's how you win at life!

The item description for the shield in BB straight up mocks shield users.

In DeS they gave you a shield that regenerated health.
And a regen ring. And loads of healing items. And a big cleaver that healed on hit. And Garl Vinland armor.
Fun game.

It kinda admits fault on the dev's end too. "Shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity" makes me think that they realise that they made shields too stronk in DS1 at least and it led to many players playing in a way that may be less fun than other methods.

I'm not afraid of the dodge button, but i do love me a shield in Dank Souls.

Two-hand weapon? Not for me!

None the less, I support laughing at shield users topics because they're largely targeted at MarthKoopa.

But the shield completes the drip. Elite Knight + Crest Shield + One Handing a Claymore.

Nah, DS2 just has reduced backstab damage taken on NG. On NG+ it goes away and you take full backstab damage. Idk if they changed it for SoTFS, but I've never heard anyone mention it.

Laughs at all the try-hards in Elden Ring. Wahhhhh, fighting birds is bullshit. It's so unfair I can't dodge them. The enemy is delaying their attack and I got hit because i rolled too early.

for a lot of situations,enemies and builds, shields are better then rolling, why give yourself a handicap and not use every tool you have to win?
