Reading the reviews... I feel like this is a case of critic disconnect.

The biggest complaint they all seem to have is that the scares aren't great, too few, and that there's too much focus on lore/the campy story over making the movie scary.

And, fair enough, I guess. But like... the story/lore is literally the thing that the fans are interested in. Nobody cares about the "horror" of fnaf, anymore; it's not 2015. The sole reason the series is even relevant anymore is because of the story/theory crafting community behind it.

Seems to me like the movie is delivering what the audience wants, which is different than what the critics want.

... I mean, the movie is probably still terrible; most video game horror movies are. But these reviews don't really seem like they line up with what the movie or fans were actually looking for.

Yep.

Cinemascore is an A- meaning that the opening day audience is quite positive, but it was mostly their target demographic. So have to think if you fit that.

It is 2.7 (out of 5) on Letterboxd, which are more film geeks. Not a good score.

Ignore Rotten Tomatoes audience and IMDB. They are both rife with trolls.

Yeah, that's a total misunderstanding of what fans would want from a movie. FNAF hasn't been about the scares since like FNAF 2.
