I could be reading this wrong, but their little infographic seems to imply that what they're doing is giving every frame of the video its own unique hash, basically a block chain of video frames, which would make it unbelievably computationally expensive to take even a simple home video.

It is a legitimate solution in theory. I agree in practice it would be pretty impossible right now, but so was 99% of what was theorized in the late 60s when it came to computing and look where we are now because of it.

Quantum computing at a consumer level is a genuine possibility within the next 25 years.

Like I said. A lot of what we are using now were theorized in the late 60s. We would not be where we are today without those theories.

People assume technology s always living in the now when it is exactly the opposite. NASA is decades ahead of where it can be, but they do their work knowing it cannot be applied in practice using today's technology. Limiting yourself to what can only be done now without regard to a future is one of the most regressive forms of human "achievement"

Again, I don't see your issue with it being impossible right now. These are working theories towards a solution to a greater problem that will hit society. This technology will be feasible within the next 25 years due to advancement in quantum computing.

No, I'm not. When did I personally even mention the block chain? You are the one assuming things about me, my dude.

You are also unaware of how this doesn't actually really combat the deepfake problem. The real problem with deepfakes is the initial viewing. The people who don't bother to find out if what they saw was real or not.

You do realize if this technology were to become foolproof and efficient, it would be up to legislators to start criminalizing acts of posting deepfakes?

Doesn't even have to be criminalized. Civil damages will be incurred towards anyone violating another party through the method of deepfaking. If it can be verified otherwise, it's a slam dunk.

I shouldn't be "anything", because I don't live in a hivemind.

Anyway, crypto is a huge vague umbrella for a lot of Web3 technologies. If you are referring to proof of work tokens such as Bitcoin, I am 100% against the use of those technologies. But there is nothing inherently "wrong" with the idea of a blockchain, or crypto itself for that matter. The amount of energy is wasted is solely dependent on the solutions we decide to roll with going forward. Embracing archaic and ancient chains such as Bitcoin is damaging to the environment and defeats the purpose of a potential decentralized network.

I don't believe in NFTs either, anymore than I do as a protection for digital artist rights. Not the "lol bored ape gimme money" markets.

It's not impossible right now(where the specific law doesn't currently exist), nor would it be impossible in the future. The same machine learning that helps make deepfakes can and is used to detect deepfakes.

Again, this serves no real purpose when one of the real issues that can be had is the initial impact of the video, not people finding out afterward that it's fake. Even videos currently out there that people know are fake still circulate.

Then you aren't left leaning on principle then, because the right & center certainly don't care outright or as much about the environmental impact or sustainability in the slightest, has nothing to do with 'hivemind'. Based on policy you SHOULD value the environment, but have differences on how it's safeguarded.

Outright these systems will never be optimized or regulated enough so that they will be energy neutral, the point of them is to move them away from being regulated or put on guard rails, that's why Web3 shit is all a scam. Just silk road & dark web BS for scams & rip offs.
