Japan has a huge amount of LGBQT media/games....

Granted there are a few J-drama's coming out but aside from that I don't see much rep in Tokyo.

a lot of transgender/LGBTQ characters are still mostly joke/minor/fanservice characters in Japanese media

I don't see the connection between LGBT and gamer noodles. It's a psychedelic rainbow, not a Pride rainbow. Gamers are stereotyped for being junk food eating stoners at best, and incel bigots at worst.

I just saw this post. Yeah they have an idea of what the LGBT is, but it definitely isn't to the point where they'll start actively showing representation for it on a mass scale.

Hell I know two japanese girls who laughed at an LGBT movie filter recently when we were scrolling through something to watch. I don't think it was malicious, but it's something still pretty foreign to them.

There's rainbow stuff everywhere that isn't necessarily LGBT in Japan and it's not really a culture issue here like in the US. You won't see people melting down over a rainbow or buying something because it has a rainbow, because the amount of people who make hating LGBT people their life's work is very small. It's the same for abortion, there just isn't a debate about it because it just isn't something most people get worked up about here. If you just assume every country has the same political environment as the US you're going to end up being wrong a lot. Wait until you look at South Korea and find out the left wing are the ethno nationalists, whole different set of culture wars going on there that just don't map onto US politics at all.

Not sure what that means. They have LGBT dramas on TV pretty regularly. It's just that it isn't a big deal for most people.

That's exactly it. Yeah theres rep, but compared to the west it doesn't have a spotlight as much.

And with what other posters said in this topic, a lot of media use Yuri and Yaoi as a more erotic genre than actual rep. A lot of it is seen differently in Japan.

I remember watching Sankaku Mado no Sotogawa wa Yoru and even the male protagonists interests weren't really highlighted. Although Roppongi Class (remake of Itaewon class) had an arc with a trans character, again it wasn't really a big spotlight. Maybe 1 or 2 episodes on it.

I agree that they have quite a few dramas though. I think the writing for their gay characters are actually pretty good when its focused entirely on them >_>

tbf drugs are even less likely to be used as a symbol over LGBT in Japan.

Definitely check out if you are looking for that. It isn't Yuri though, so don't expect super attractive actresses or erotic scenes. It's just a really good story about a lesbian couple that revolves around making and eating food.

been trying to look for different recipes recently.

If you guys want wholesome food dramas, I'd recommend Little Forest starring Ai Hashimoto and the more recent the Makanai on Netflix. The former has a lot more in-depth features on food and growing it, like a documentary style whilst the latter is less focused on the actual making of the food but really wholesome on the character relationships.
